Lewis Hamilton explains how his technical influence helped transform Ferrari’s SF-26 project
Lewis Hamilton has offered fresh insight into the increasingly influential role he now plays inside Ferrari, revealing how his technical feedback, engineering requests and internal restructuring have contributed to the development of the SF-26. After a challenging debut campaign with the Scuderia, the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion believes the team has entered a completely different phase, with stronger collaboration finally allowing Ferrari to unlock its potential.
The British driver has gradually established himself as one of the central figures behind Ferrari’s technical evolution. Following a difficult first season adapting to a new environment and new regulations, Lewis Hamilton has become one of the driving forces behind several key development decisions that have helped the team return to the front of the Formula 1 grid.
The progress has also been reflected on track. Lewis Hamilton claimed his first podium finish for Ferrari before securing his maiden victory in red, while consistently scoring points throughout the season. Entering the British Grand Prix weekend, he sits third in the Drivers’ Championship, trailing only the Mercedes pair, and currently enjoys a healthy advantage over teammate Charles Leclerc in the standings.
Lewis Hamilton pushed Ferrari towards bold technical solutions
Speaking during media day ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton explained that his contribution to the SF-26 extended well beyond driving duties. The Ferrari driver indicated that he had been heavily involved throughout the development process, requesting several technical changes that have now become important elements of the current package.
Lewis Hamilton revealed that one of his earliest requests focused on the front suspension, a concept he had proposed during the previous season and initially evaluated in Ferrari’s simulator. He also highlighted the introduction of his preferred braking package this year, describing it as a major improvement that significantly increased his confidence behind the wheel.
The seven-time world champion also pointed to Ferrari’s willingness to embrace more aggressive engineering concepts. According to the Briton, he had encouraged the Scuderia to take greater risks with its design philosophy, a direction that ultimately produced innovative solutions like the Macarena front wing and the FTM system, developments that have attracted attention from rival Formula 1 teams during the 2026 season.
Engineering team changes strengthened Ferrari’s internal collaboration
Lewis Hamilton explained that the transformation has not been limited to technical upgrades on the SF-26. Behind the scenes, Ferrari has also reorganised the structure surrounding the British driver, introducing important changes to his engineering group and refining communication between different departments.
According to Lewis Hamilton, these adjustments have helped create a more unified working environment. Rather than operating as separate groups pursuing different objectives, the team has aligned its approach with Ferrari’s leadership, allowing everyone to work towards the same goals. He believes this stronger internal harmony has accelerated development and improved decision-making throughout the organisation.
Trust has become the foundation of Ferrari’s resurgence
Lewis Hamilton also reflected on the difficulties he encountered during his first year at Maranello, admitting that it was far more challenging to convince the team to embrace his ideas while results remained disappointing. He suggested that poor performances naturally reduced the weight of his feedback, making it harder to introduce meaningful changes.
As Ferrari’s competitiveness improved, however, the relationship evolved. The British driver explained that mutual trust has gradually been established, creating a healthier exchange of ideas between driver and engineers. Instead of one side simply making demands, both parties now challenge each other constructively, helping Ferrari accelerate its development programme.
That growing confidence has become one of the foundations of Ferrari’s resurgence in 2026. With Lewis Hamilton playing a leading role both inside and outside the cockpit, and Charles Leclerc continuing to contribute valuable feedback alongside him, the Scuderia appears better positioned than it has been in recent years to continue its pursuit of victories and championship success.
