Following the official announcement of Fred Vasseur’s contract renewal, Lewis Hamilton has revealed what, in his view, unites the French team principal and his former Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff.
On Thursday, during media day ahead of the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari made it official that Frédéric Vasseur had signed a new multi-year contract with the Maranello-based team. This news brought an end to all speculation regarding the potential departure of the Frenchman and silenced the many rumors circulating around the team in recent weeks.
Lewis Hamilton, who joined Ferrari in 2025 after leaving Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, has always shown strong support for Vasseur and welcomed Ferrari’s decision with enthusiasm.
“I think it’s the right choice,” said the seven-time Formula 1 world champion. While discussing the contract extension, Hamilton also pointed out some similarities between Fred Vasseur and his former team principal Toto Wolff, under whom he won multiple championships at Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton’s Comments on the Vasseur Renewal
Naturally, following the announcement, both of Ferrari’s drivers were asked for their thoughts on Fred Vasseur’s renewed deal. During media interviews with several outlets, including ScuderiaFans.com, Hamilton confirmed that he was pleased with Ferrari’s decision: “I only found out yesterday,” Hamilton said. “As I’ve already mentioned, I think Fred is the right choice. I signed to work with him, and I’m happy to have him leading the team.”
When asked whether he sees any similarities between Fred Vasseur and Toto Wolff, Hamilton replied: “They work in completely different ways. But what they have in common is a great passion for racing.”
Lewis Hamilton’s Record at the Hungaroring
Lewis Hamilton holds a remarkable record at the Hungaroring circuit, making it one of his strongest venues historically. He currently has eight victories at the Hungarian Grand Prix, along with nine pole positions, 12 podiums, a total of 286 points scored, and 487 laps led.
During the press sessions, Hamilton was asked whether he believed reaching a 10th pole position at the track was possible and if another podium could be within reach: “As far as pole is concerned, this year we’ve always been far off,” Hamilton admitted. “So I’ll take the weekend step by step.”
On Ferrari’s Progress and McLaren’s Pace
Lewis Hamilton then spoke about the recent technical upgrades brought to the SF-25 and how the team is still working to fully understand and exploit their potential. Despite the improvements, the British driver admitted that Ferrari is still not quite on the same performance level as McLaren, which has consistently shown strong pace throughout the 2025 Formula 1 season.
“The upgrade is positive, and we’re still trying to extract the maximum from it,” he said. “Charles [Leclerc] did a great job last weekend, bringing home a podium. At the moment, we’re still not at McLaren’s level. But I hope I can [get back on the podium],” the Briton concluded.
With his characteristic composure and experience, Lewis Hamilton appeared optimistic yet realistic about Ferrari’s current performance trajectory and reaffirmed his trust in Fred Vasseur’s leadership as the team continues to evolve.
