F1 | Does Ferrari fear the regulation changes? Lewis Hamilton explains the difficulties ahead of 2026
Formula 1 is preparing for the arrival of the new regulations that will come into force in 2026. But what exactly is creating difficulties for the teams? Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton has shared his perspective on the rule changes, stressing that all teams are working hard to be ready for the new era of the sport. However, as the seven-time World Champion pointed out, there is one key factor that is making life complicated for the engineers compared to past transitions.
The British driver, who joined Ferrari at the start of the 2025 season, explained that this regulatory overhaul is very different from those he experienced in the past because of one specific element introduced only a few years ago: the budget cap. The cost cap, which has applied to all teams since 2021, has been progressively reduced over time. As Lewis Hamilton noted, this restriction has a direct impact on the preparation for the next generation of cars.
Ferrari itself is not having the easiest of seasons, and Lewis Hamilton’s transfer to Maranello has already proven to be a complicated journey. But the Mercedes and McLaren legend made it clear that these challenges are not unique to the Italian team. Every constructor on the grid must deal with the same issue as they try to balance development for the present with investment in the future.
Lewis Hamilton made his Formula 1 debut in 2007, and since then he has lived through three major changes in the technical regulations. Speaking to the accredited media in Baku, including ScuderiaFans.com, he compared the upcoming 2026 rules to the first major transition he experienced as a driver. “I remember that in 2008 we were still able to develop a lot,” Hamilton recalled. “Until the very end of the season we remained competitive. Back then, it was more like a parallel development process.”
That situation is very different today. The introduction of the budget cap means teams can no longer invest equally in two projects at once, and sacrifices are inevitable. Hamilton explained: “This makes the current season less exciting because there are not so many updates. But next year will be different.” His words highlight how the rule changes have reshaped the way teams approach both short-term and long-term planning.
Lewis Hamilton also clarified that he could not give a proper assessment of the 2013 rule change, since he switched teams during that transitional period. At that time he left McLaren to join Mercedes, a move that turned out to be decisive. Mercedes went on to dominate the first half of the hybrid era between 2014 and 2021, although in the final season of that era the German team only managed to secure the Constructors’ Championship.
As the countdown to 2026 continues, Lewis Hamilton’s comments underline the magnitude of the challenge facing Ferrari and all the other teams. The budget cap has transformed the way Formula 1 operates, forcing teams to rethink their strategies. The next regulation cycle will not only mark the start of a new technical era but could also redefine the balance of power on the grid.
