Nicolas Hamilton has revealed that he has never asked his brother Lewis Hamilton to finance his motorsport career, despite the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion having the means and willingness to help. The British Touring Car Championship driver has deliberately chosen to build his own racing path, explaining that accepting financial support from his famous brother would conflict with the values that shaped their family.
Being related to one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history inevitably brings advantages, but Nicolas Hamilton believes the Hamilton surname has also created additional pressure throughout his career. Rather than relying on Lewis Hamilton’s success, he has been determined to prove that his own place in professional motorsport was earned independently.
Nicolas Hamilton has never asked Lewis Hamilton to fund his racing
Seven years younger than Lewis Hamilton, Nicolas Hamilton has raced professionally since 2011. He has competed in the British Touring Car Championship since 2019, apart from an absence during the 2024 season, and has accumulated 159 starts in the category. His best result has been sixth place at Donington Park, achieved three years ago.
Funding remains one of the biggest challenges for drivers competing at national motorsport level, but Nicolas Hamilton has refused to treat his brother as a financial shortcut. Speaking on the Gypsy Tales podcast last month, he explained that he had never approached the current Ferrari driver for money and would not feel comfortable doing so.
The BTCC racer acknowledged that Lewis Hamilton would have been prepared to support him financially if asked. However, accepting that assistance would have left him feeling guilty because of the way Lewis Hamilton and their father, Anthony Hamilton, had worked to build their own careers without relying on handouts.
That family background has long been an important part of Lewis Hamilton’s story away from Formula 1, with Anthony Hamilton playing a central role during the seven-time champion’s early years in motorsport.
Why independence matters so much to Nicolas Hamilton
For Nicolas Hamilton, the decision is also deeply connected to his own life experiences. Born with cerebral palsy, he explained that he had worked extremely hard physically simply to be able to walk and to reach his current position. That experience strengthened his determination not to accept what he considers handouts when pursuing his racing ambitions.
He also wanted to avoid the perception that his opportunities existed only because he was Lewis Hamilton’s brother. Nicolas Hamilton acknowledged that some people continue to make that assumption because of his surname, but maintained that he has reached his current position through his own efforts.
His family has nevertheless provided important support in other ways. Nicolas Hamilton credited them with helping him mentally, while Anthony Hamilton assisted him in getting his career started. The distinction, in his view, is between having a supportive family and expecting his brother to pay for his racing programme.
The brothers have remained closely connected as their respective racing careers have developed. Their relationship was highlighted again when Lewis Hamilton celebrated an important Nicolas Hamilton racing achievement, showing the support between them without changing the younger brother’s determination to establish his own identity.
The Hamilton surname has helped and hindered Nicolas Hamilton
Nicolas Hamilton admitted that being related to Lewis Hamilton inevitably opens certain doors. At the same time, however, he believes the family name can become an obstacle because every achievement is judged against an extraordinary benchmark.
He described his surname as something that has helped in some areas while making life more difficult in others, stressing that his career has not been straightforward simply because his brother became a Formula 1 superstar.
That comparison is particularly demanding because Nicolas Hamilton does not pretend that his own career should be measured against Lewis Hamilton’s. He openly recognised that he is not the same type of driver as his brother and is not a seven-time Formula 1 World Champion.
Instead, his measure of success is more personal. Whether competing at the front or towards the back of the field, Nicolas Hamilton considers himself a champion in his own right because of what he has overcome to compete professionally.
Nicolas Hamilton built his own commercial partnerships
The desire for independence extends beyond the cockpit. Nicolas Hamilton has secured commercial agreements in his own right, including a partnership with Monster Energy that has continued since 2015.
Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, is reportedly earning around £53 million per year as a Ferrari driver. The enormous difference in financial resources makes Nicolas Hamilton’s decision particularly notable: the opportunity to seek help exists, but he has deliberately chosen not to use it.
For the younger Hamilton, that approach is ultimately about credibility and self-respect. His brother’s achievements may make the surname one of the most recognisable in motorsport, but Nicolas Hamilton wants his own career to be judged on what he has done rather than on the financial resources Lewis Hamilton could provide.
Lewis Hamilton is not the only F1 driver with a racing sibling
The Hamilton family is far from the only example of siblings following different paths through motorsport. Several relatives of current Formula 1 drivers are competing, or have previously competed, in other categories.
Oliver Bearman’s younger brother Thomas Bearman is racing at Formula 4 level, continuing a family involvement in motorsport alongside the Ferrari-linked Formula 1 driver. Oliver Bearman’s rise has already placed increased attention on his younger brother’s progress, with the Bearman family’s motorsport journey continuing across different categories.
Charles Leclerc also has a younger brother with significant racing experience. Arthur Leclerc has driven Ferrari Formula 1 machinery during practice sessions and now competes in GT racing. His involvement with Maranello has included testing and development opportunities alongside other Ferrari-affiliated drivers, with Arthur Leclerc previously earning Formula 1 practice opportunities with Ferrari.
Oliver Norris initially followed his brother Lando Norris into motorsport before choosing a different direction and moving into the sim racing business.
For Nicolas Hamilton, however, the challenge has always involved more than simply sharing a famous surname. His brother reached the summit of Formula 1, but Nicolas Hamilton has deliberately resisted using that success as a financial foundation for his own career. Instead, he has chosen to measure his achievement by the independence of the path he has taken and the obstacles he has overcome to remain in professional motorsport.
