Lewis Hamilton’s maiden victory with Ferrari in Barcelona inevitably brought to mind one of the most iconic moments in the Scuderia’s (unfortunately not so) recent history: Michael Schumacher’s first win in red, achieved on that very same Catalan circuit back in 1996. Highlighting this curious parallel was the seven-time world champion himself, who, following his Spanish triumph, shared a deeply personal childhood memory tied to that day.
Lewis Hamilton remembered that historic victory under the pouring rain vividly. “I was sitting on the couch watching the race. I had a plate on my lap, maybe a sandwich or some chicken noodle soup,” the British driver shared.
At the time, Lewis was just 12 years old, and Ferrari already represented a dream. “When I saw that red car, I simply thought: I would love to know what it feels like to sit in that red cockpit,” he recalled.
It took nearly thirty years for that wish to become a reality, and while Michael Schumacher needed just seven races to claim his first victory with Ferrari, Hamilton had to wait much longer. Following his Sprint race victory in China in 2025, many fans had imagined a rapid adaptation, but his first season in Maranello proved to be more complicated than expected. It was only with the arrival of the new generation of cars and recent technical developments that Ferrari managed to make the definitive leap in quality, returning the Briton to the top step of the podium.
However, there is one specific detail that, according to Lewis, doesn’t quite match the image he had as a child. “Unfortunately, my cockpit is white. I don’t like it at all. I have always wanted a completely red car, just like Michael’s. But sooner or later, I will make it all red again,” the Briton joked.
In conclusion, Lewis Hamilton’s nostalgic reflection connects his monumental milestone with the legacy of Michael Schumacher, proving that while technical adjustments and cockpit colors may evolve, the romantic allure of winning in a Ferrari remains a timeless dream for the sport’s greatest champions.
