It’s official: the outcome of the impeding incident between Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli during Austrian GP practice has arrived.
The second free practice session of the Austrian GP saw Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli involved in an impeding incident. The maneuver was noticed by the stewards and subsequently investigated at the end of FP2.
Attention to the precedent of Oliver Bearman: the Haas driver received a harsh 10-place grid penalty in Monaco. On that occasion, the Briton had ignored a red flag and performed an overtake.
The Federation imposed a very strict disciplinary measure, and Bearman strongly criticized it. In addition to the penalty, he also received two penalty points on his Super Licence, bringing his total to four.
In Austria, Hamilton impeded Antonelli during the second free practice session. The young Mercedes driver, who recently graduated, found the seven-time world champion in front of him, squeezing him in Turn 4 and forcing him off track. “What’s wrong with these people?” complained the Italian.
“I didn’t see Antonelli, I’m sorry,” said Lewis Hamilton over the radio to his pit wall.
At the end of the session, both drivers met with the stewards to discuss the impeding incident. The verdict is finally in: the stewards have decided to issue a warning to Lewis Hamilton.
Here is what the document states: “The driver of car 44, although consistently checking his mirrors after being informed by the team of car 12 approaching, slowly moved towards the white line entering Turn 4. Therefore, he impeded car 12 without justification; the latter had to take evasive action. Car 44 apologized directly as soon as he realized the mistake.”
The stewards thus declared that although the impeding maneuver was “more than lenient,” it was unnecessary. That is why they decided to issue a simple warning to Lewis Hamilton.
