Lewis Hamilton was forced to stop his Ferrari during the second free practice session for the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix after suffering a loss of power at Turn 13. The problem emerged midway through FP2, bringing the seven-time Formula 1 world champion’s Friday running to a premature end.
The issue occurred in the final sector of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, preventing Lewis Hamilton from improving his lap time. Ferrari subsequently instructed the British driver to stop his SF-26 on the circuit, interrupting his planned practice programme.
Lewis Hamilton suffers power loss at Turn 13 in Mexico GP FP2
Lewis Hamilton encountered the power loss while negotiating Turn 13 during the second practice session in Mexico City. With the Ferrari unable to continue normally, the team instructed him to bring the car to a halt.
The interruption meant that the British driver could not complete his remaining running or attempt to improve his previous lap time. His Friday practice programme therefore ended earlier than planned, leaving Ferrari with a setback during an important session of preparation for the Mexican Grand Prix.
Virtual Safety Car deployed after Ferrari stops on track
Following the instruction to stop the car, race control activated the Virtual Safety Car to allow Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari to be recovered safely. The neutralisation temporarily interrupted normal running before the session could resume.
The incident came during a weekend in which Ferrari had already identified significant cooling and grip challenges at the Mexico City Grand Prix, although the exact cause of the power loss was not specified.
