Lewis Hamilton facing enormous challenge at Ferrari as Charles Leclerc earns ‘future world champion’ praise
Lewis Hamilton has reportedly been warned that overcoming Charles Leclerc at Ferrari could require something extraordinary, with growing belief inside the Formula 1 paddock that the Monegasque driver has all the qualities needed to become a future world champion if the Scuderia can provide him with a title-winning car.
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion made his highly anticipated switch to Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season in what many initially viewed as one of the most iconic partnerships in modern motorsport history. Hamilton’s arrival at Maranello generated enormous excitement across Formula 1, as the sport’s most successful driver joined its most historic and recognizable team in pursuit of a record-breaking eighth world championship.
However, Hamilton’s first campaign in Ferrari colours proved far more difficult than many had expected. The British driver struggled to consistently adapt to Ferrari’s operating style, car characteristics and internal dynamics during his debut season with the Scuderia. While flashes of his experience and racecraft remained evident, the overall campaign was ultimately disappointing by his exceptionally high standards.
By the end of the 2025 Formula 1 season, Hamilton had finished sixth in the drivers’ standings and trailed teammate Charles Leclerc by a substantial 86-point margin. The gap reinforced Leclerc’s position as Ferrari’s established team leader and highlighted the challenge Hamilton faced trying to adapt to a completely different environment after spending over a decade at Mercedes.
Although the early stages of the 2026 season have shown encouraging signs of improvement for Hamilton, Leclerc still appears to hold the upper hand within Ferrari. The British driver has looked increasingly comfortable with the SF-26 and managed to secure his first podium finish for Ferrari at the Chinese Grand Prix, an important milestone that suggested progress was finally being made.
Even so, several figures within the Formula 1 world continue to believe Hamilton faces an uphill battle if he hopes to consistently outperform Leclerc across a full season. Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers recently suggested that Leclerc belongs in the elite category of drivers capable of fighting for world championships under the right circumstances.
Speaking during the Telegraaf Formule 1 podcast alongside journalist Erik van Haren, Albers reportedly placed Leclerc on a similar level to reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen, although he still considered Verstappen marginally superior overall. According to Albers, Leclerc has already demonstrated the talent and speed expected from a genuine world championship-caliber driver, but he has never previously had machinery capable of sustaining a title-winning campaign.
Albers also pointed toward examples from the current season where Leclerc occasionally struggled during individual race weekends, such as in China, allowing Hamilton opportunities to finish ahead. However, he maintained that over the course of an entire championship, Hamilton would likely need exceptional circumstances to regularly defeat his younger Ferrari teammate.
The former Dutch driver reportedly explained that he was not surprised by the situation, despite Hamilton’s extraordinary achievements in Formula 1. In his view, Formula 1 has now entered a new generational phase, with drivers such as Leclerc and Verstappen representing the benchmark level of the current era.
Leclerc’s raw pace, qualifying performances and overall consistency continue to earn admiration throughout the paddock. Many observers believe the Monegasque driver possesses all the necessary attributes to eventually become Ferrari’s next Formula 1 world champion if the team can finally deliver a car capable of consistently fighting at the front.
For Ferrari, the internal dynamic between Hamilton and Leclerc remains one of the most closely watched stories in Formula 1. The Scuderia entered the 2026 campaign hoping the combination of Hamilton’s experience and Leclerc’s speed would strengthen their championship ambitions during the sport’s new regulatory era.
Ferrari’s SF-26 has already attracted considerable attention thanks to its radical aerodynamic concepts and innovative technical solutions. However, despite encouraging progress with the chassis and aerodynamic package, the Italian side are still believed to trail Mercedes in overall engine performance. Reports suggest Ferrari continue to face a power deficit of approximately 20 horsepower compared to their rivals from Brackley.
That weakness has prevented Ferrari from fully maximizing the potential of their overall package, particularly on circuits where straight-line speed plays a decisive role. Lewis Hamilton himself recently hinted that Ferrari were actively exploring solutions to reduce drag and improve straight-line performance ahead of upcoming races.
The seven-time world champion is now preparing for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, a circuit that holds special significance in his Formula 1 career. It was in Canada back in 2007 that Hamilton secured the first Grand Prix victory of his Formula 1 career during his rookie season with McLaren.
Heading into the Montreal weekend, the Briton reportedly indicated that he intended to approach the race differently following concerns about Ferrari’s current preparation methods. The British driver suggested that the team’s existing processes had not been delivering the desired results and that adjustments were needed if Ferrari hoped to improve competitiveness.
Lewis Hamilton also acknowledged Ferrari’s ongoing straight-line speed limitations, explaining that the team needed to better understand the drag issues affecting performance on long straights. Improving aerodynamic efficiency and reducing the deficit to rivals such as Mercedes and Red Bull could become crucial if Ferrari want to place both drivers in regular contention for victories during the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Despite the difficulties, Lewis Hamilton’s determination to succeed with Ferrari remains clear. However, the challenge presented by Charles Leclerc is becoming increasingly evident. With the Monegasque driver entering the prime years of his Formula 1 career and continuing to deliver elite-level performances, many now see him as one of the strongest drivers on the grid alongside Max Verstappen.
For the Briton, defeating Charles Leclerc consistently at Ferrari may ultimately require more than experience and reputation alone. As the 2026 Formula 1 season continues, the battle between Ferrari’s two star drivers could become one of the defining storylines of the championship.
