Charles Leclerc focused on Ferrari world title dream rather than surpassing Michael Schumacher’s appearance milestone
Charles Leclerc has admitted that he does not take much satisfaction from the prospect of eventually overtaking Michael Schumacher as the Ferrari driver with the most Formula 1 Grand Prix starts, as his main ambition remains securing a world championship with the Scuderia rather than setting longevity records.
The Monegasque driver recently moved into second place on Ferrari’s all-time list for race appearances after competing in his 154th Grand Prix for the Italian team during the Miami Grand Prix weekend. Since joining Ferrari at the start of the 2019 Formula 1 season, Leclerc has established himself as one of the central figures of the Scuderia’s modern era, consistently carrying the team’s hopes during both competitive and difficult periods.
Only Michael Schumacher now remains ahead of Leclerc on Ferrari’s historic appearances list. The legendary German driver made 180 Formula 1 race starts for Ferrari between 1996 and 2006, a period during which he transformed the Maranello-based squad into one of the most dominant teams in Formula 1 history. Schumacher also captured five consecutive drivers’ championships with Ferrari from 2000 to 2004, cementing his status as one of the greatest drivers ever to wear the famous red colours.
Leclerc’s own journey with Ferrari began long before his Formula 1 promotion. After joining the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2016, the young Monegasque quickly emerged as one of the brightest talents in junior motorsport. Backed heavily by Ferrari throughout his development, he secured the GP3 title in 2016 and followed it with the Formula 2 championship in 2017 during his rookie campaign in the category.
Those performances convinced Ferrari to place him at Sauber for the 2018 Formula 1 season in order to gain valuable experience before eventually replacing Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari one year later. Since then, Leclerc has become a long-term cornerstone of the Scuderia project and one of the most recognizable drivers on the Formula 1 grid.
Despite climbing toward one of Ferrari’s most prestigious statistical records, Leclerc reportedly made it clear that he would rather be remembered for championship success than for the number of races completed with the team. The 28-year-old acknowledged that reaching such milestones felt unusual because he still considered himself relatively young in Formula 1 terms and still vividly remembered his first season with Ferrari.
However, Leclerc also stressed that personal appearance records carried little meaning for him if they were not accompanied by championship glory. His ultimate target continues to be winning the Formula 1 drivers’ title with Ferrari, something the Scuderia have not achieved since Kimi Raikkonen secured the championship back in 2007.
Leclerc explained that his focus remained entirely fixed on becoming a world champion with Ferrari and that he had not paid much attention to the statistic regarding race starts until recently. He reportedly indicated that surpassing the German legend in appearances alone would not represent the type of legacy he wanted to leave behind at Maranello.
Although Leclerc has already delivered multiple pole positions, victories and memorable performances for Ferrari, the elusive Formula 1 world championship has continued to escape both driver and team. His strongest opportunity arrived during the early stages of the 2022 season, when Ferrari appeared capable of mounting a genuine title challenge following the introduction of Formula 1’s ground-effect regulations.
Ferrari began that campaign in impressive fashion, with Charles Leclerc emerging as Max Verstappen’s primary rival in the championship battle. However, as the season progressed, Red Bull rapidly accelerated their development pace while Ferrari struggled with reliability issues, strategic mistakes and inconsistent performance. Verstappen ultimately dominated the championship, while the 28-year-old was left to settle for the highest championship finish of his Formula 1 career so far.
There is growing belief within the paddock that another title opportunity could emerge for Leclerc during the 2026 Formula 1 season, particularly because Ferrari have shown encouraging signs under the sport’s latest regulation overhaul. The Scuderia’s SF-26 has attracted significant attention for its innovative aerodynamic concepts and aggressive interpretation of the new chassis regulations.
However, Ferrari are still believed to face an important disadvantage compared to Mercedes in terms of power unit performance. Reports suggest the Italian side may currently trail Mercedes by approximately 20 horsepower, an issue that has prevented Ferrari from fully exploiting the potential of their aerodynamic package during the opening races of the season.
Even with that limitation, Leclerc has continued to demonstrate strong pace throughout 2026, although costly mistakes have occasionally undermined his results. The Miami Grand Prix proved particularly frustrating for the Ferrari driver after what initially looked set to become one of his strongest weekends of the campaign.
Leclerc had been running competitively near the front of the field and appeared capable of securing a valuable haul of championship points. However, his race unraveled after he spun while attempting to apply pressure on Oscar Piastri during an intense battle. The incident significantly compromised his afternoon before an additional 20-second penalty eventually dropped him down to eighth place in the final classification.
The disappointing Miami result was especially painful because Ferrari’s overall race pace had looked highly competitive throughout the weekend. Many observers believed Leclerc had the potential to finish much higher had he avoided the costly error, with the Monegasque later acknowledging that a very strong result had slipped away.
Despite those setbacks, Leclerc remains central to Ferrari’s long-term ambitions as the team continues attempting to return to the top of Formula 1. Fred Vasseur’s efforts to reshape the atmosphere within Maranello, combined with Ferrari’s increasingly bold technical philosophy, have created renewed optimism that the Scuderia may finally be building toward another serious championship challenge.
For the Monegasque personally, however, records related to race starts or longevity appear secondary. His priority remains achieving the one accomplishment that would truly define his Ferrari career: becoming Formula 1 world champion in red.
