It was a bitter ending for Lewis Hamilton at the 2025 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, as the seven-time world champion now faces the risk of a penalty after being placed under investigation by the FIA stewards. Following an intense and hard-fought race, Lewis Hamilton was called to answer for exceeding track limits in the closing laps while defending his position from Fernando Alonso.
The issue arose with just four laps to go when Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari SF-25 suffered a sudden failure of the front brakes. This forced him into longer braking zones and caused him to run beyond the track limits several times to avoid hitting the barriers. The incident occurred during one of the most heated moments of the race, as Hamilton battled Fernando Alonso for seventh place.
Hamilton faces possible penalty after Singapore GP investigation
Despite the brake issue and the struggle to keep control of his car, Hamilton managed to bring his Ferrari to the finish line in one of the most dramatic races of the season. However, the final classification remains provisional pending the stewards’ decision.
According to the post-race statement, Lewis Hamilton has been summoned to appear before the stewards to explain the circumstances of the incident and provide his version of events. If the track limits violations are deemed to have provided him with an unfair advantage, the British driver could be demoted behind Fernando Alonso in the final results.
Such an outcome would make an already difficult weekend even worse for Ferrari, as Lewis Hamilton had been dealing with technical issues since the practice sessions. The brake problem forced him to fight to keep the car on track, and one of his off-track moments through the final sector chicane caught the attention of race control.
The FIA confirmed that the investigation concerns a suspected off-track excursion that may have resulted in a time advantage. The Ferrari driver will be heard “after the race” alongside a team representative. Should a penalty be applied, Hamilton would likely drop one position in the final classification, finishing behind Fernando Alonso.
The official verdict from the stewards is expected within the next few hours.
