A “not exceptional” day
The good mood with which Lewis Hamilton had approached the Canadian GP weekend did not last long, comforted by the news that behind his bad feelings experienced in Barcelona with the SF-25 there were objective problems with the car. After Friday in Montreal, with an FP2 session ending in eighth place over half a second behind his former Mercedes teammate George Russell, the seven-time world champion’s expression darkened significantly.
“How was today? Not exceptional,” admitted Lewis Hamilton, looking rather downcast in an interview with the official F1 channel. “I love driving here, the crowd was fantastic today. But the car was very different from what I experienced here in the past. In FP1 I think everything went well, but then we made some changes and honestly I thought the car would be faster, but instead we ended up slower. Or at least, others were faster.” – the seven-time Formula 1 world champion pointed out.
Top-5 difficult
In 15 career appearances at the Montreal track, Lewis Hamilton has collected seven wins and 10 podiums. Improving on those numbers this weekend, however, seems difficult even for #44 himself: “Rear lock-ups? Yes, I’m sure we’ll solve those overnight. There are some changes to be made. Qualifying? We will fight to get into Q3, it’s not impossible, and then we will try to fight to be in the top 5. But it will be tough.” – the Briton concluded after Friday’s practice sessions at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal.
