Lewis Hamilton delivers stunning late move on Max Verstappen in Canada
Lewis Hamilton turned back the clock in the closing stages of the Canadian Grand Prix with a brilliant overtake on Max Verstappen, producing one of his trademark racing moves to move into a stronger finishing position for Ferrari.
After spending several laps glued to the rear of the Red Bull, Lewis Hamilton remained patient as he searched for the right opportunity. By lap 60, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion was applying relentless pressure, sitting directly on Max Verstappen’s rear wing but finding no obvious route through on the narrow Montreal circuit.
The breakthrough finally came on lap 62 of 68. Lewis Hamilton carried superior momentum out of the final chicane, positioning his Ferrari perfectly for the run toward Turn 1. In a move that echoed some of his most memorable overtakes from previous seasons, the Briton swept around the outside of Max Verstappen to complete a decisive and clean pass.
It was a move built on experience, racecraft and timing. Overtaking Max Verstappen is rarely straightforward, particularly in the final laps when tyre wear, battery deployment and defensive positioning all come into play. Lewis Hamilton judged the moment perfectly, forcing the Red Bull driver into a situation where he simply could not respond.
For Ferrari, the overtake represented more than just a position gain. A result ahead of Max Verstappen would mark Lewis Hamilton’s strongest Grand Prix finish since joining the Scuderia, offering another encouraging sign that the partnership is beginning to find greater consistency in race conditions.
With only a handful of laps remaining, Ferrari’s focus would now shift to keeping Max Verstappen behind. But the overtake itself was a statement: even in the closing stages of a demanding race, Lewis Hamilton still has the instinct, precision and confidence to produce elite wheel-to-wheel racing when it matters most.
