F1 Barcelona, Hamilton starts with a P9
For Lewis Hamilton, the Friday in Barcelona only began in the second free practice session, as he handed over his Ferrari seat to Dino Beganovic in FP1, as required by the regulation dedicated to young drivers. The seven-time world champion therefore had to compress his entire running programme into a single session, completing valuable mileage on a full circuit and in a car featuring significant updates to the floor, sidepods, and front wing.
The front wing, however, proved to be a weak point for Sir Lewis on the day. The front wing suffered an issue during the soft-tyre race simulation, which added to a lack of rear-end confidence and significant tyre degradation. These factors did not help the British driver’s performance, as he ended FP2 in Barcelona in ninth place.
Hamilton’s comments
“My only session of the day was quite challenging: there was an issue with the front wing that made things a bit more complicated, especially in terms of tyre preparation, and missing the first session left me starting a bit on the back foot,” Lewis Hamilton said.
“There is still work to do, but we collected useful data and tonight we will focus on the changes we need to make in order to improve for tomorrow.”
