Lewis Hamilton and Scuderia Ferrari are two worlds destined never to meet. Some rumors emerged in the spring, just before the Monaco Grand Prix, but the two sides didn’t go beyond casual discussions. The facts say that the seven-time world champion will remain with Mercedes for two more full Formula One seasons, while the Scuderia must decide whether to extend Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz beyond 2024.

The British driver admitted that there were only conversations with Ferrari and no offers: “I never really thought about changing teams. And I never received an offer from Ferrari. Okay, we had some casual conversations, I know many good people there. But I never felt ready to move to Italy,” he said in an interview for Swiss German-language daily newspaper Blick.

It makes one wonder what would have happened if Ferrari had actually insisted with Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff. Perhaps the Maranello team didn’t feel like investing heavily in a driver who, as strong and competitive as he is, doesn’t guarantee a prolonged stay at a high level, being already 38 years old. A gamble that wouldn’t have been easy for a team that hasn’t won a drivers’ championship since 2007, just as it wouldn’t have been easy for Lewis Hamilton to choose the Scuderia (he has few chances left to win an eighth championship).

Lewis Hamilton will likely finish his career with Mercedes, having signed a contract extension until the end of the 2025 Formula One season. With the Brackley team, the British driver will aim to achieve the final milestones in Formula 1. In addition to the eighth title, Lewis Hamilton is chasing 200 podiums (currently at 196): “It’s a crazy number, I’m sure I’ll get there,” he commented with a laugh.
