Lewis Hamilton may be approaching his best opportunity yet to secure a first Formula 1 Grand Prix victory with Ferrari, as the characteristics of the SF-26 appear increasingly well suited to some of the most demanding circuits on the calendar.
After joining the Maranello team ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season, the Briton experienced an extremely difficult debut campaign with the Italian team. Expectations surrounding the partnership between the seven-time Formula 1 world champion and the Scuderia had been enormous, yet the first year together failed to deliver the results many anticipated.
Lewis Hamilton openly described his first season in red as one of the toughest periods of his Formula 1 career. Ferrari struggled with inconsistency throughout the campaign, while adapting to the team’s unique operating style and car philosophy proved more challenging than many expected.
Despite the setbacks, the early stages of the 2026 Formula 1 season have provided more encouraging signs. Lewis Hamilton already managed to end his podium drought by finishing third at the Chinese Grand Prix, delivering his first top-three Grand Prix result as a Ferrari driver.
The podium in Shanghai represented an important breakthrough for Lewis Hamilton after an extended difficult period stretching back to his final months at Mercedes. Before the Chinese Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton had gone 27 races without standing on a Formula 1 podium, dating back to the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Monaco could become the perfect stage for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari
Although Lewis Hamilton has returned to the podium, his wait for a Grand Prix victory continues. His most recent Formula 1 win officially came at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, where victory was awarded to Lewis Hamilton following George Russell’s post-race disqualification for an underweight Mercedes car.
As things currently stand, the upcoming 2026 Monaco Grand Prix is set to mark 40 races since Lewis Hamilton last crossed the line as a Formula 1 winner. However, there is growing belief inside the paddock that Ferrari could arrive in Monaco with the strongest overall package on the grid.
The Canadian Grand Prix still offers Lewis Hamilton an earlier chance to end the drought. Montreal has historically been one of the British driver’s strongest venues, with Lewis Hamilton sharing the all-time Canadian Grand Prix wins record with Michael Schumacher after taking seven victories at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.
Even so, many Formula 1 analysts believe the streets of Monaco may provide an even greater opportunity for Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton. The SF-26 has demonstrated excellent balance through medium- and low-speed corners throughout the opening phase of the 2026 season, an area that could become decisive around Monaco’s narrow and unforgiving street circuit.
Reports within the Formula 1 paddock have already indicated that Ferrari are expected to be among the favourites for victory in Monaco. The SF-26’s responsive front end and strong traction characteristics are considered especially valuable around the Principality, where precision and confidence through slow-speed corners are critical.
Ferrari’s current power unit configuration may also play a role. The team’s smaller turbo design is believed to provide sharper responsiveness at lower speeds, potentially giving Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc an advantage when accelerating out of Monaco’s tight corners.
Charles Leclerc success proves Ferrari’s Monaco potential
Ferrari already demonstrated its competitiveness around Monaco recently when Charles Leclerc finally secured an emotional home victory at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. That triumph ended years of frustration for the Monegasque driver on home soil and confirmed Ferrari’s ability to master the unique demands of the circuit.
In 2025, Charles Leclerc once again looked capable of fighting for victory in Monaco before Lando Norris secured the win for McLaren. Charles Leclerc ultimately finished behind the British driver after an intense strategic battle through the streets of Monte Carlo.
The previous success of Charles Leclerc in Monaco naturally increases optimism surrounding Ferrari’s chances in 2026. While Charles Leclerc remains exceptionally strong around the Principality, Lewis Hamilton’s experience and race management could also become major factors if Ferrari delivers a genuinely competitive package.
Lewis Hamilton already has three Monaco Grand Prix victories to his name, and another triumph would move him alongside Alain Prost among the most successful drivers in Monaco Formula 1 history. Such an achievement would also mark a defining moment in Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari journey.
Pressure continues to build around Lewis Hamilton’s win drought
The discussion surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s current Formula 1 win drought has intensified because it represents one of the longest difficult periods of his legendary career. Outside of the challenging 2022 and 2023 seasons, Lewis Hamilton has rarely gone such an extended period without standing on the top step of the podium.
During those two difficult Mercedes campaigns, Lewis Hamilton failed to win a single Grand Prix across both seasons. The struggles ultimately played a significant role in his decision to leave Mercedes and begin a new chapter with Ferrari from 2025 onward.
That difficult stretch eventually reached 56 Grands Prix without a victory, the longest winless run of Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 career. While the current drought has not yet reached those levels, Ferrari will be eager to avoid allowing the situation to continue deep into the 2026 campaign.
There are nevertheless clear indications that Ferrari are moving in the right direction. The SF-26 appears significantly more stable and predictable than its predecessor, helping Lewis Hamilton regain confidence behind the wheel while also allowing Ferrari to challenge more consistently near the front of the grid.
Much attention will now turn toward the next two races, with both Canada and Monaco potentially offering ideal opportunities for Lewis Hamilton to finally secure his breakthrough Ferrari Formula 1 victory.
If Ferrari can fully exploit the strengths of the SF-26, and if Lewis Hamilton can combine experience with renewed confidence, the long-awaited first Ferrari win may finally be within reach. Achieving that result before the drought reaches 40 races would also remove a growing source of pressure surrounding one of Formula 1’s most closely watched partnerships.
