Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton believes Scuderia Ferrari has seized the chance to make a lot of progress as compared to Mercedes with the development of their challenger for the next Formula 1 championship.
Ferrari was aware it had no chance of fighting for the title last season and therefore made the call to focus on the 2022 project from the early stages of the 2021 campaign, while Mercedes and Red Bull were involved in a very close and exciting battle for both titles last year, until the final round of the season, in Abu Dhabi. Despite the fact that Red Bull and Mercedes did also work on their 2022 challenger while also developing last year’s car, Lewis Hamilton feels the Maranello team will have an advantage at least in the first races:

“You would assume that Ferrari perhaps didn’t do much development of that car and just put everything into this year’s car,” he said. “So does that mean that they’re several months ahead? Or a team is several months ahead of everyone? We’ll wait and see.” – he explained.
Lewis Hamilton is looking forward to the intrigue created by one of the biggest changes in Formula 1’s regulations that was introduced ahead of the 2022 campaign. All ten teams have started the pre-season testing session in Barcelona today and many different aero solutions to the new rules could be seen. Lewis Hamilton stopped by the garages of some teams including rivals Red Bull earlier today.
“Just this morning arriving and walking down the pit lane and seeing all the different cars, I think it’s one of the most exciting and interesting seasons that we’ve ever embarked on. So it’s interesting to see where everyone comes out and where we stand at the start in the first race. This is a really exciting time,” he added. “We don’t know where everything stands at the moment. But I do hope that these rules deliver what Ross [Brawn, F1 motorsport director] showed us years ago in terms of closer racing. It’s definitely puts everyone hopefully on a more level playing field.”” – he concluded.
