Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen reportedly interested in competing in MotoGP
The world of motorsport is witnessing a new twist in the ongoing rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. According to Motorsport.com, the two Formula 1 champions are reportedly considering purchasing a team in the MotoGP championship, potentially opening an entirely new chapter in their competitive history.
This news comes just weeks after the official announcement of Guenther Steiner, former Haas team principal, taking over as CEO of the Tech3 team, recently sold to the Ikon Capital consortium.
Guenther Steiner’s move to the two-wheel paddock sets an important precedent: it marks the first time a high-profile figure from Formula 1 has transitioned to MotoGP. However, the sale of Tech3 has immediately closed the door for potential buyers. In theory, only independent teams remain available, as the five factory squads—Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia—are not for sale.
Verstappen, Hamilton, and their interest in MotoGP
The Dutch champion, already active with his own Verstappen.com Racing in GT3, has shown curiosity about motorcycles. “Max is a huge motorsport fan in general. It’s no secret that he’s also interested in MotoGP, but thinking about buying a team right now isn’t realistic,” stated his manager Raymond Vermeulen. Rumors suggest there were exploratory contacts with LCR Honda, though no concrete negotiations have started.
Back in 2023, Hamilton had already expressed interest in investing in MotoGP, even considering a move with Gresini Racing. The deal didn’t materialize, but the British driver has continued exploring other opportunities through his representative, Mark Hynes. “I’m interested in the growth potential of MotoGP. I haven’t analyzed everything in detail yet, but I would certainly like to be part of it,” Hamilton explained. His interest is reportedly supported by TWG Motorsports, the group controlling the Cadillac team set to enter Formula 1 in 2026.
Currently, among the independent teams still on the market, contenders include LCR and three other private entities. The possibility of Pramac-Yamaha seems more remote following recent closer ties between Paolo Campinoti’s team and the Japanese manufacturer. Nevertheless, the interest from Hamilton and Verstappen confirms MotoGP’s growing appeal to top-tier motorsport investors worldwide.
