Lewis Hamilton and George Russell put on a spectacular show in the fight for fourth
The British Grand Prix produced one of its most exciting moments on lap 30, as Lewis Hamilton and George Russell treated the Silverstone crowd to a breathtaking wheel-to-wheel battle that highlighted the skill and commitment of both British drivers.
With fourth place on the line, Hamilton launched a fearless attack on the Mercedes driver through one of the fastest sections of the circuit. The Ferrari driver carried tremendous speed around the outside at Copse Corner, pulling off a move that immediately brought the grandstands to their feet.
For a brief moment, Hamilton appeared to have completed one of the overtakes of the race. However, the duel was far from over.
Russell fights back on the Hangar Straight
After Hamilton edged ahead through Copse, the two drivers remained side by side as they accelerated through the demanding Maggotts and Becketts sequence, neither willing to lift in one of Formula 1’s most iconic combinations of corners.
Russell then made full use of the Mercedes’ straight-line performance heading down the Hangar Straight. Positioning his car perfectly for the braking zone into Stowe, he reclaimed fourth place with a decisive counterattack, completing an outstanding exchange that showcased the respect and determination of both drivers.
The battle underlined just how closely matched Ferrari and Mercedes were during the latter stages of the race. While the Maranello driver demonstrated impressive confidence through Silverstone’s high-speed corners, Russell responded with excellent racecraft and strong traction to regain the position before the lap was over.
A classic Silverstone duel
Moments like this have become synonymous with the British Grand Prix, where the circuit’s flowing, high-speed layout often creates some of the best wheel-to-wheel racing on the Formula 1 calendar.
For Ferrari, Hamilton’s aggressive move showed the seven-time world champion’s determination to fight for every position despite the challenges of the race. Although the overtake ultimately did not stick, the battle demonstrated that the Ferrari driver was prepared to attack whenever an opportunity presented itself.
With the race entering its closing stages, the intense fight between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell added another memorable chapter to an already action-packed afternoon at Silverstone, giving fans one of the standout battles of the 2026 British Grand Prix.
