Formula 1 will return to racing this weekend in Hungary at the Hungaroring circuit. As with every Grand Prix, the Max Verstappen – Red Bull duo is expected to be the favorite. Scuderia Ferrari (on paper) can be competitive and aim for the podium, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz looking to bounce back after the British Grand Prix debacle. Both Ferrari drivers have been at the center of speculation regarding their future in Formula 1.
At the moment, neither Charles Leclerc nor Carlos Sainz have discussed contract renewals with the top management at Ferrari. Both drivers’ contracts with Ferrari are set to expire at the end of 2024… The fact that both drivers still need to negotiate their renewals with the team raises some concerns within the Italian side.
Italian journalist and Ferrari insider Leo Turrini commented on the matter during an interview for the Pit-Talk podcast. Leo Turrini first highlighted that Fred Vasseur stated at the beginning of the 2023 Formula 1 season that, given the disastrous technical situation at the Maranello team, discussions about contract renewals with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz would only begin during the summer break…
The journalist from Sassuolo stated that at the moment, without technical guarantees, both the Monegasque and the Spaniard are in no rush to renew their contracts with the Italian side.
“I believe that both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are very frustrated and disappointed. Because until March, when the championship started, they were convinced they would have a car to be competitive in every race. And I am convinced that neither of them is in a hurry to sign the contract renewal until they have technical certainty for the future.” – the Ferrari insider pointed out.

Leo Turrini then added that both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz still have a year and a half left on their contracts with Ferrari in Formula 1. Currently, there are no available seats, although a spot could open up at Mercedes at the end of the 2023 Formula One season if Lewis Hamilton does not renew with the German team.
“Where could Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz go? If Lewis Hamilton renews, there won’t be any available spots. Red Bull is dependent on Max Verstappen. Audi is coming in 2026. So if you’re Leclerc or Sainz, what alternative do you have that gives you the certainty of joining a team that is more competitive than Ferrari?” Leo Turrini concluded.
