Formula 1 journalist and Scuderia Ferrari insider Leo Turrini, interviewed by Pit Talk Radio yesterday evening, expressed his very first impression on Frederic Vasseur, who recently began his activity in Maranello as Ferrari team principal replacing Mattia Binotto:
“Frederic Vasseur is a professional who knows the sport very well, and this is an irrefutable aspect! He also has experience working in the minor categories with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. And then his Formula 1 story is known. People who didn’t have specific skills were placed in that chair, he has all the tools to evaluate and understand what Ferrari needs. After that, as I always say, let’s keep in mind that Ferrari is a unique microcosm. There is a pressure that doesn’t exist elsewhere, if in Red Bull they do something silly in terms of pit wall decisions or with the strategies, nobody makes a big deal out of it. If they are wrong it is not that after two minutes there is a social media process as happens in Italy. Fred Vasseur must immerse himself in this reality and he must be given time to get to know all the dynamics and put everyone in the ideal conditions to best carry out their task.” – Leo Turrini explained.
Anyway, it takes time. He has been here since January 9th. He clearly said that he needed to understand the reasons why some things, including the pit wall strategies, didn’t work last season. And he still can’t know if it’s a question of some individuals or an issue of the organization in general. You have to sit around the table with these people and see what can be done to correct the situation so that certain unpleasant episodes never happen again. I still think that some changes have to be made but he hasn’t said at all that he has to necessarily move this or that person.” – Italian sports journalist and author Leo Turrini concluded.
