Minute by minute reactions following the sad news that all motorsport fans received today continue to grow: the death, at the age of 87, of engineer Mauro Forghieri. The man who wrote very important pages in the history of Ferrari and racing in general died today, leaving a deep void not only in the world of those who constantly follow Formula 1, but of all Italians.
Many wanted to recall memories of Mauro Forghieri and among these there was also Lapo Elkann, entrepreneur and brother of Ferrari president John Elkann.
Forghieri, originally a Ferrari apprentice, was tasked with stepping up to lead Ferrari’s technical team in the 1960s by founder Enzo after a mass walkout led by chief designer Carlo Chiti. He penned the 158 design which led John Surtees to the 1964 World Championship, but it would be over a decade before the Maranello team tasted F1 success again.
The 45-year-old grandson of Gianni Agnelli recalled his memory of the legendary ‘Furia’ (this was the nickname of Mauri Forghieri) with a message published on Twitter, reminding us once again how much his name was linked to that of the Prancing Horse, brought by the creative mind of the engineer from Modena to many triumphs between 1962 and 1984. “Ferrari loses one of its brightest minds. One of those engineers to be proud of all over the world. Mauro Forghieri is and will always be the history of Ferrari“, the thoughts written by Lapo Elkann on the popular social network.
