The tragic news of Mauro Forghieri’s passing saddened not only the whole world of motorsport, but the entire Italy, which loses one of its greatest engineering minds and a man who for many years has been appreciated thanks to his brilliant inventions and his numerous successes, achieved above all with Ferrari between the 70s and 80s.
Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who was responsible for the Maranello Racing Team from 1973 to 1977, was also part of that successful historical era for the Prancing Horse. Affected by the news of Mauro Forghieri’s death, the former Ferrari president wanted to remember ‘Furia’ with some touching words, as reported by the ANSA news agency.
“With Mauro Forghieri, not only does one of the greatest Italian technicians leave us, appreciated all over the world, but also a close friend and collaborator with whom I shared wonderful years and unforgettable sporting successes” – said Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who together with Forghieri won three constructors’ titles and two drivers between 1975 and 1977 with Scuderia Ferrari – “I am close to his family and I will miss him very much”.
Condolence for the sad circumstance was also expressed by the mayor of Modena, Gian Carlo Muzzarelli: “Not only Modena, but the whole country loses a point of reference, an extraordinary man who has contributed to making Ferrari and the local territory great”, said the mayor, speaking on behalf of the entire municipal administration.

To certify the international caliber of Mauro Forghieri’s genius, a very simple but equally touching tweet was posted by Damon Hill. The 1996 Formula 1 world champion, commenting on a photo that commemorated the death of the former Ferrari technical director, admitted that he had never personally known ‘Furia’ but was still linked to his name and to his memory: “I’ve never met him but his name is legendary – wrote Damon Hill, whose father Graham raced and won right in the middle of the ‘Forghieri era’ – Goodbye Mr. Forghieri and thank you”. These last words were written in Italian by the former F1 driver.
“Legends last forever. Remembering Mauro Forghieri. 1935 – 2022. It’s been an honour making history together. Ferrari and the world of motorsport will never forget you.” – was the message posted by Scuderia Ferrari on its social media accounts. With a lasting legacy of innovative, often beautiful designs, Mauro Forghieri ultimately played a very important role in securing the Maranello team’s fortunes through almost three decades on the racing circuits.
