After several disappointing seasons, Scuderia Ferrari have emerged as title contenders in the 2017 Formula One season and Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen is convinced that the Maranello team has the ability to fight back and challenge current champions Mercedes until the end of the season, despite the fact that the most recent round, the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix, marked the first race in which Ferrari did not manage to score a podium finish in 2017.
Mercedes dominated the sport from 2014 to 2016, winning 86% of all the races in that three year period. Yet given new aerodynamic regulations introduced for the 2017 season, Scuderia Ferrari has risen to the challenge and seem determened to continue the fight for the Formula 1 title. Despite being outclassed last week in Canada, Kimi Raikkonen believes Ferrari can regain the lead: “It will be an exciting fight and that’s fine. We just need to make sure we maximise our chances each weekend. There is no reason to think we will get a relapse now. Some people are a bit sceptical but I think Ferrari can maintain this until the end. The most important thing is that we are now in a much better position than before and I am sure we will develop our package at least as good as the competition for the second part of the season. It is a long year and an intense struggle. It is important always to exploit our potential, to give more and more whether it’s a good or bad weekend and to always try to get the best result.” – Kimi Raikkonen explained, as reported by the Italian media on Thursday.
Ahead of the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place next week, Sebastian Vettel is leading the Formula 1 Driver Standings with a 12-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton, but Scuderia Ferrari has lost the lead in the Formula 1 Constructor Standings and will have to fight back to try to make up ground as quickly as possible.
