Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable victory at Monza has revived a question that has followed the Italian throughout his rapid rise in Formula 1: why does one of the country’s brightest talents race for Mercedes rather than Ferrari? After charging from the back of the grid to win the Italian Grand Prix, Andrea Kimi Antonelli was celebrated by a sea of red-clad fans who, for a few moments, made the occasion look almost like a Ferrari victory.
The Mercedes driver completed a sensational recovery before throwing himself into the arms of his home crowd, who celebrated him as one of their own. As if the symbolism were not already strong enough, a supporter even tried to place a red Ferrari cap carrying the Prancing Horse logo on his head. The moment immediately brought the long-standing Ferrari question back into focus during a dramatic chapter of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli grew up in Bologna, only a short distance from Maranello, and many have wondered why Ferrari did not bring him into its programme when his talent first began to emerge. What is certain is that the 20-year-old broke another major barrier at Monza, becoming the first Italian to win there in 60 years and even sending Ferrari supporters into celebration despite the fact that he drives for one of the Scuderia’s biggest rivals.
Kimi Antonelli’s Ferrari cap moment after his historic Monza win
The Italian national anthem rang out proudly at Monza, one of the most iconic circuits in the Formula 1 World Championship. It had been far too long since an Italian driver had given the home crowd the chance to hear it after victory, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli achieved it with the speed and freshness of a 20-year-old who already races with the confidence of a veteran.
After lifting the trophy, Andrea Kimi Antonelli launched himself into the red-clad crowd for a bout of crowd-surfing. During the celebrations, somebody placed a Ferrari cap on his head. The Italian driver appeared emotional but also visibly embarrassed by the amount of attention and by the gesture from supporters who would clearly love to see him wearing those colours properly one day.
His awkward reaction was also understandable because moments of that nature can sometimes create complications for drivers and teams. Contracts frequently contain provisions designed to prevent drivers from promoting rival brands or teams, helping to avoid uncomfortable situations with sponsors or images that could create commercial or diplomatic problems.
Why Kimi Antonelli does not race for Ferrari
The fan’s attempt to put a Ferrari cap on Andrea Kimi Antonelli inevitably leads to the bigger question: why did Ferrari not secure him earlier? He was a talent who developed practically on Maranello’s doorstep and is now considered one of the leading drivers in Formula 1, yet he competes for Mercedes.
Ferrari was obviously aware of Andrea Kimi Antonelli from his earliest successes, and former team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has since explained what happened. Speaking in a relatively recent interview, Maurizio Arrivabene was particularly direct about Ferrari’s position at the time.
“At that time Ferrari did not yet have the structure to look after children that young.”
At 11 years old, Andrea Kimi Antonelli was racing karts with links to the Ferrari brand and his route towards Maranello appeared to be taking shape. However, as Maurizio Arrivabene later confirmed, Ferrari did not have the necessary structure to develop such a young prospect, who was considered too young for the team to make a proper assessment.
Toto Wolff has also maintained that Ferrari took too long to recognise the full extent of Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s potential. By then, the youngster was already moving towards Mercedes, where his development would ultimately be managed by the German team. Toto Wolff’s protection of the Italian has remained a significant part of his career, while Lewis Hamilton has also previously supported Andrea Kimi Antonelli during his Mercedes journey.
Davide Valsecchi explains why Mercedes may have helped Kimi Antonelli
What would have happened if Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s career had followed a different path? The reaction of the Monza crowd provides an indication of how popular an Italian Ferrari driver of his calibre could become, although there is no guarantee that his development would have been equally successful.
In an interview with Fanpage.it, former racing driver Davide Valsecchi argued that not beginning his Formula 1 journey with Ferrari actually helped Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Davide Valsecchi pointed to the pressure experienced by Charles Leclerc during his Ferrari career and to the difficulties Lewis Hamilton endured during his first season in red.

“Just look at the pressure Charles Leclerc sometimes faces, despite having proved that he can win in Formula 1. Imagine a young Italian driver at Ferrari last year, with a car that was achieving few results. He might have had a terrible season like Lewis Hamilton did, and imagine what the press, the media and the public would have done to him. We were lucky that he went to Mercedes. It’s true, they are rivals, but he blossomed in a calmer environment. Above all, Toto Wolff gave him calmness and protection when he needed it.”
From that perspective, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s move to Mercedes ultimately proved beneficial to his development. The future, however, remains unwritten, and the idea of one day seeing the Italian in Ferrari colours is unlikely to disappear after scenes such as those witnessed at Monza.
For now, Lewis Hamilton believes such a move is unlikely to happen in the near future. The Ferrari driver has suggested that Toto Wolff is unlikely to allow Andrea Kimi Antonelli to leave Mercedes any time soon, meaning the young Italian’s story with the team that developed him may still have a long way to run.
