Championship leader Kimi Antonelli insists he is not paying attention to the Formula 1 standings despite enjoying an outstanding start to the 2026 season. Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, the young Mercedes driver acknowledged that battling Lewis Hamilton for the world title would be an incredible experience, while recognizing the Ferrari star’s unrivaled championship pedigree.
Kimi Antonelli refuses to focus on the standings
“Honestly, I don’t look at the championship standings,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli said, determined not to become distracted by what has been a dream start to his 2026 Formula 1 campaign.
However, the young Italian’s momentum suffered a setback two weeks ago in Barcelona, where he recorded his first retirement of the season after a battery failure forced him out of the race.
The battery has become Mercedes‘ biggest weakness in recent weeks, prompting the team to introduce an updated battery pack for both Antonelli’s W17 and George Russell’s car at the Austrian Grand Prix in an effort to solve the reliability issues that have cost the Brackley-based outfit valuable championship points.
Mercedes also heads into Spielberg following its first defeat of the 2026 season, with former driver Lewis Hamilton claiming his maiden Ferrari victory at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Hamilton is now Antonelli’s closest challenger in the Drivers’ Championship, with 41 points separating the two.
Antonelli on a potential title fight with Lewis Hamilton
“Fighting Lewis Hamilton for the championship would be something huge,” Antonelli said ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix weekend. “Ferrari are certainly very competitive and they’ll be a team to watch. George Russell is also performing extremely well. I also expect McLaren and Red Bull to close the gap, so it won’t be easy.”
“If I end up fighting Lewis Hamilton for the title, it definitely won’t be easy because he has so much experience. He’s already been through situations like that before and he knows exactly what he needs to do. For me, it would all be completely new. But for now, I just keep focusing on one race at a time without thinking too much about the championship.”
