Indian racing driver and television presenter Karun Chandhok feels that Scuderia Ferrari could be the “big” threat in the 2022 Formula 1 chamionship.
With just a few days until the official pre-season testing session which takes place this week at the Bahrain International circuit, sevaral pundits and paddock insiders have hyped up Scuderia Ferrari’s prospects for the following season based on what could be seen during the three days of testing at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona last week. While the first two days saw the Maranello team and McLaren on top of the timesheets, Mercedes and Red Bull came to the fore on the final day in Spain.
While the first test cannot give any certain indications regarding the on track values, Scuderia Ferrari is expected to come back strong in 2022 after two difficult years of fighting only for a place in the midfield zone. For now the focus shifts to the second pre-season testing session in Bahrain, where Mercedes and Red Bull are expected to bring massive upgrades to the Sakhir circuit, both for this week’s test and the season-opening grand prix, while Ferrari will instead focus on maximizing the potential of the F1-75 car. An in the meanwhile fans or pundits alike talking up Ferrari’s chances.

“I think Ferrari is the big one,” Karun Chandhok said for Sky Sports – “They have had a big advantage in terms of development but they also made some big steps last year. They had a pretty diabolical 2020 to be honest but the way they bounced back from being sixth in 2020 to third and actually getting podiums on merit last season was seriously impressive. They introduced a big power unit upgrade in Russia, which I think was four or five months ahead of schedule, which is not a thing you’d normally see in Formula 1. It bodes well.” – he explained.
Scuderia Ferrari approach the 2022 Formula 1 season having had more time than the likes of Mercedes and Red Bull to work and develop their new challenger, as the Maranello team had more R&D time and also focused on the 2022 project from the early stages of the previous campaign.
A strong Ferrari Formula 1 team, capable of fighting for race wins and titles would be good for both the sport and the Italian side’s fans, Karun Chandhok explains:
“I think you know wherever we go even today, despite the Mercedes Red Bull battle, the biggest fan base is still a Ferrari fan base so that’s going to be great to see if they can get themselves in the fight.” – he added.
