According to former Formula 1 driver Karun Chandhok, currently a commentator and analyst for Sky Sports F1, the quickest driver in Formula 1 presently is Scuderia Ferrari man Charles Leclerc, not Red Bull’s two-time Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen.
During the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc achieved his third consecutive pole position, becoming the first non-Red Bull driver to secure the top qualifying spot in the current Formula One campaign. The Monegasque driver repeated the performance earlier today at the Baku City Circuit, taking the pole position in the first ever Sprint Shootout.
Since joining Scuderia Ferrari, Charles Leclerc has established himself as a skilled qualifier, with 19 pole positions, but has unfortunately been able to take just five race victories so far.
Despite the fact that Charles Leclerc’s performance during qualifying and the Sprint Shootout was remarkable, he was unable to win the Azerbaijan Sprint race, which was won by Mexican driver Sergio Perez for Red Bull, who took advantage of the incredible top speed of the RB19 single-seater. Still, the Ferrari man did fend off Max Verstappen, who came in third on Saturday.
Despite Max Verstappen’s exceptional pace on one lap, Sky Sports F1 commentator Karun Chandhok strategy believes that Charles Leclerc is in fact the best qualifier on the grid currently.

“I genuinely think over one lap he is now the fastest driver in Formula 1,” Chandhok said during his commentary for Sky Sports in the Sprint Shootout at the Baku City Circuit on Saturday.
“His ability to extract extra grip out of fresh tyres for one lap is immense. I think he is the best qualifier we have on the grid right now.” – Karun Chandhok concluded.
