Let’s take a look at the top speeds from the Sprint Shootout for the 2023 Formula 1 Azerbaijan GP Sprint race at the Baku City Circuit
Ferrari vs Red Bull analysis:
Red Bull’s chassis produces less drag: when running similar wings, Red Bull’s top speed is higher
In Baku, Scuderia Ferrari is running a less loaded upper plane: when DRS=OFF, top speed is similar
Under DRS, the drag of the upper planes equalises, and Red Bull retakes the edge
From end of Sector 2 to the finish line, Max Verstappen’s gap to Charles Leclerc increased by 0.002s
Despite having a much lower top speed than RB (334 vs 342km/h yesterday), the Ferrari had excellent acceleration along the main straight!
Red Bull’s advantage only appears once it activates the DRS
When opening the DRS, Carlos Sainz’s speed grew from 321km/h to 334km/h in just a couple of seconds. This fact tells you how draggy Formula 1 rear wings are, even the low-downforce wings used here!
