In a recent interview for Motorsport.com, former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya analyzed the main events of the most recent round of the 2023 Formula 1 championship, the Miami Grand Prix, focusing on Red Bull, Scuderia Ferrari, and Mercedes. Here’s an excerpt of his comments:
Juan Pablo Montoya’s analysis:
“I think Max Verstappen did a really good job, especially with the hard tires. The key was to get past everybody really quickly on the hard tire. And then, when everybody’s tires started to go off, he didn’t have any issues,” Juan Pablo Montoya begins, referring to Max Verstappen, the winner of the race at the Miami International Autodrome in Florida, USA, after starting from ninth place.
He then adds: “On the other hand, I think Checo (Perez, ed) was too conservative in the first stint. Maybe he tried to preserve the tires a little bit too much. I don’t think he expected Max to be really fighting on Sunday, he realized it too late. I think after Baku, Max wanted to remind him, ‘Hey, don’t forget who I am!’ I think Sergio Perez missed an opportunity. With Max so far down the grid, he should have pushed harder in his first stint. He could have done it, just look at the gap they gave to Fernando Alonso and the others.” – explained the Colombian racing driver who won the International F3000 championship in 1998, the CART FedEx Championship Series in 1999 in his debut year in the series, and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship four years ago.

The Colombian then focused on the two ‘defeated’ teams in this early part of the 2023 Formula 1 season: “I think the biggest surprise in terms of lack of pace has been Ferrari, especially towards the end of the Grand Prix. Lewis (Hamilton, ed) struggled a bit in the first part of the race, but then came back quite strong, even compared to the Ferrari drivers.” And looking ahead to Imola, where both teams will bring significant updates, he concluded: “Everyone is starting to bring upgrades, but the question is how big are the upgrades and whether they will be significant enough to really make a difference.” – Juan Pablo Montoya pointed out.
