Christian Horner is reportedly getting closer to a move to Scuderia Ferrari, but past tensions with Lewis Hamilton could jeopardize the negotiations. The former Red Bull Racing Team Principal, who was recently dismissed from his long-standing role with the Milton Keynes-based team, has now become one of the hottest names in the Formula 1 paddock. His potential arrival in Maranello is stirring speculation, especially after the 2025 British Grand Prix, as Ferrari continues to face growing internal pressure and public criticism due to its underwhelming results this season.
Although most of the media focus has been on the Formula 1 driver market, the possibility of a high-profile leadership change at Ferrari has now taken center stage. Rumors suggest that Christian Horner could be lined up to replace current Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur, who joined Ferrari at the beginning of 2023. However, such a decision could put Lewis Hamilton’s future with the Maranello-based team at serious risk.
This potential conflict was highlighted by well-known British Formula 1 journalist Will Buxton, along with fellow broadcaster and F1 analyst Jennie Gow. Gow outlined the scenario during a recent discussion: “There are rumors that Ferrari has been approached in an effort to bring Christian Horner to the team. As Will said, I think it’s a bit of a stretch to believe that this will actually happen. Personally, I don’t think Christian Horner would be the ideal choice for Ferrari.”
According to Jennie Gow, a more likely outcome is that Christian Horner might instead join the Alpine F1 Team, especially considering his personal circumstances. “Would Christian and his family move to Italy? I really don’t think so,” she added, suggesting that a collaboration with Flavio Briatore at Alpine might make more sense from both a logistical and strategic point of view.
Hamilton and Horner: A strained relationship
The relationship between Lewis Hamilton and Christian Horner has long been marked by tension. The most notable flashpoint came during the dramatic 2021 Formula 1 season, when Hamilton—then driving for Mercedes—fought an intense title battle with Max Verstappen, who was under Horner’s leadership at Red Bull Racing. The rivalry culminated in one of the most controversial season finales in F1 history, and the hostility between the Mercedes and Red Bull camps left a lasting impact.
Although Christian Horner has officially remained Red Bull’s Team Principal through the 2025 season, his departure opens up new possibilities. Yet it is widely believed that such a move to Ferrari could create major friction, particularly with Lewis Hamilton, now driving in his debut season for the Scuderia.
Will Buxton also elaborated on the motivations behind Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari. It wasn’t just about the prestige of the Italian team—renowned as the oldest and most iconic constructor in Formula 1—but also about personal relationships. A key reason, Buxton pointed out, was the opportunity to reunite with Frédéric Vasseur, who played a pivotal role in Hamilton’s early racing career and junior formula successes. “Lewis absolutely loves that man and has complete trust in Fred Vasseur. If Fred were to be replaced by Christian Horner, I don’t think Lewis would remain a Ferrari driver for much longer,” Buxton concluded.
As Ferrari President John Elkann evaluates the team’s future direction, he may find himself having to make a difficult decision: pursue a new leadership model under Christian Horner, or stay loyal to Frédéric Vasseur and safeguard the harmony that currently exists with star driver Lewis Hamilton. The outcome of this internal debate could reshape the future of Ferrari’s ambitions in Formula One.
