Scuderia Ferrari was able to take advantage on the opportunity provided by the new rules and regulation for the 2022 Formula 1 season in order to design a car capable of fighting against Red Bull and Mercedes for race wins.
And indeed the F1-75 car proved to be very competitive in the first part of the campaign, with Charles Leclerc emerging as an early title contender thanks to two victories in the first three races, in Bahrain and Australia. However, as the season progressed, several power unit reliability issues, strategical errors and a few drivers’ mistakes have prematurely ended Ferrari’s hopes of winning the world championships this season.
In addition to this, Red Bull seem to have also out-developed the Maranello team, as Max Verstappen and the Austrian team have become a dominant factor in the last two races. The Dutchman is set to wrap up his second consecutive title in the next rounds, unless Ferrari can hit back and secure a few consecutive race wins.
Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto has received a lot of criticism for the many errors the Maranello team has made in the first part of the season.
In an interview for Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Ferrari chairman John Elkann has publicly defended Mattia Binotto but at the same time admitted that the team must learn to avoid doing such mistakes.

“We have great faith in Mattia Binotto and appreciate everything he and all our engineers have done, but there is no doubt that the work in Maranello, in the garage, on the pit wall and at the wheel needs to improve. We must continue to make progress and that goes for the mechanics, the engineers, the drivers and obviously, the entire management team, including the Team Principal. We have seen that there are still too many mistakes when it comes to reliability, driving and strategy. Putting our trust in Binotto and his team was the right decision and it has paid off. Thanks to them we are competitive and winning again. But I am not satisfied because I think we can always do better.” – John Elkann said, ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.
