Nothing to do for Ferrari in the 2022 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix: the Maranello team tried everything to win the Monza race and this is a fact that must be acknowledged for Ferrari. Against a Red Bull RB18 car that in the hands of Max Verstappen is a rocket to quote the Dutchman himself (he defined it in this way after the embarrassing showdown in Belgium) the Prancing Horse has focused on taking the pole position with Charles Leclerc and on using an unloaded set-up to be able to defend itself in the race from Max Verstappen’s attacks, who on the other hand used a setup with more downforce to be able to preserve the tires and make the Red Bull fly in the Lesmo corners.
The Ferrari pit wall also exploited the Virtual Safety Car deployed after the power unit failure suffered by Sebastian Vettel to shorten the time of Charles Leclerc’s first pit stop, a plan that was only half-successful. The two pit stops for the Monegasque were practically mandatory even without an early pit stop, judging by the degradation of the tires highlighted by Ferrari on Sunday at Monza, while Verstappen with both soft and medium tires was a metronome.
The late Safety Car removed the huge gap between Charles Leclerc and his rival, but in terms of performance, the Verstappen-Red Bull duo undoubtedly deserved the success at Monza in front of an excellent Ferrari, certainly more brilliant than the one seen at the mercy of opponents in Belgium and Holland.
Jean Alesi in his usual post-Grand Prix Tuesday analysis made for the columns of the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, invites team principal Mattia Binotto – praised for the constant and resilient protection of all his men, just as for example Mercedes did not blame the manager for the failure of the W13 project – to intervene on the ‘market’ and bring to Maranello two key staff members capable of supporting the team in areas that have clearly highlighted gaps compared to the opponents:

“As a fan, I am also convinced that Mattia Binotto can look for some reinforcement for the future. On the strategy front, where perhaps a more aggressive approach would be useful; and on the front of quickly understanding the set-up, which Red Bull seems to be able to do much better. I’m not talking about revolutions or team restructuring, but about consolidating some decisive areas in order to counter near perfect opponents like Red Bull proved to be” – former Scuderia Ferrari driver Jean Alesi concluded.
