Former Scuderia Ferrari driver Jean Alesi believes that in 2023 Mercedes will hardly get the project wrong for the second time in a row given the qualities of the Brackley team. However, the Frenchman sees the three top teams battling it out for the Formula 1 world championship next season, with the most important challenge to be concentrated between Red Bull and Ferrari, or rather, between Adrian Newey and the Maranello team.
Speaking to Iitalian magazine Autosprint, Jean Alesi said about Scuderia Ferrari: “I think being Ferrari you have to take your two rivals into consideration. Red Bull is currently the absolute frontrunner in Formula 1 and is incredibly strong in every area. Mercedes is getting stronger and stronger, especially after George Russell’s victory in Brazil. I don’t think they’ll get the car design wrong twice in a row.” – the former Formula 1 driver pointed out.
The Frenchman wanted to praise the skills of Adrian Newey, the current Red Bull chief technical officer: “When we really look at how things are, we notice that the factor we have to take into account is Adrian Newey. Since Formula 1 announced the new regulation and more freedom for the engineers, Newey has made the difference” – said Jean Alesi – “He has become the deciding factor, because he has the ability like no other to keep improving the car over the course of the season, even if they are small changes, in the end, they are still small benefits”.
The Frenchman then explained that according to him the 2023 challenge will be based mainly between the Technical Director of Red Bull and Ferrari: “I don’t think it will be a fight between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, but more specifically between Adrian Newey and Ferrari. If he comes up with another masterpiece, everything will still be very difficult this year. We must not forget that for better or for worse, Adrian Newey is a fundamental factor in winning or losing” – former Scuderia Ferrari driver Jean Alesi concluded.
