Jean Alesi has criticised Lewis Hamilton over his Ferrari team radio complaints during the Dutch Grand Prix, arguing that the seven-time Formula 1 world champion’s frustration was out of place and insisting that the Maranello team deserves respect.
Lewis Hamilton subsequently apologised for his comments after expressing repeated frustration with the Ferrari pit wall at Zandvoort. Reflecting on his behaviour once the race was over, the British driver said: “Those team radios weren’t the best version of me. Proud of Ferrari, we’re getting there.”
Jean Alesi criticises Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari radio complaints
Lewis Hamilton had been unhappy with Ferrari’s tactical management of the race, which eventually saw him finish fourth, just behind George Russell. The tension was particularly evident around the handling of the positions involving Charles Leclerc, with Hamilton believing the team could have reacted differently during a crucial phase of the Grand Prix.
Jean Alesi, however, does not believe that episode was responsible for Lewis Hamilton missing out on a podium. In his customary Tuesday post-race column for Corriere della Sera, the former Ferrari driver made his position clear.
“I found Hamilton’s complaint over the radio and after the race out of place,” Jean Alesi said. “Fine, Charles didn’t give up the position immediately, but I don’t think that is why the podium was missed. Lewis has a huge personality, he is an asset, but he can be intimidating.”
Jean Alesi then delivered a reminder about the importance he attaches to representing the Italian team: “I remind all of us, but him too, that Ferrari is Ferrari. It deserves respect. Even when it does not immediately accommodate him when he makes a request.”
Lewis Hamilton apologises as Ferrari turns its attention to Monza
Lewis Hamilton’s post-race apology effectively drew a line under the immediate controversy, while Ferrari’s attention now shifts towards its home Grand Prix at Monza. Expectations are particularly high ahead of the next race on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar.
Monza is also set to mark the debut of Ferrari’s power unit equipped with ADUO-2. The new specification represents a crucial element in Ferrari’s attempt to strengthen its challenge in the Constructors’ Championship as the season moves into its next phase.
