Could Ferrari be Lando Norris’s mystery team after intriguing future admission?

Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, 2026 F1

Lando Norris has made it clear that his main ambition is to remain with McLaren for as long as possible, potentially even spending his entire Formula 1 career with the Woking team. Yet the reigning world champion has also made one intriguing admission: there is exactly one other team on the grid that he would genuinely be interested in racing for at some point in the future.

The 26-year-old refused to reveal the identity of that team, leaving the answer deliberately open. For Ferrari fans, that inevitably raises an intriguing question: could Lando Norris be referring to Ferrari? Nothing in his comments confirms a link with Maranello, and the British driver did not provide any clues about the unnamed destination, but his admission leaves room for speculation over the one Formula 1 challenge that might eventually tempt him away from McLaren.

Lando Norris has spent his entire F1 career with McLaren

Lando Norris joined the McLaren Young Driver Programme before making his Formula 1 debut with the same team in 2019. He has remained at Woking ever since, building his career within the organisation and eventually reaching its highest point last season by winning the Formula 1 World Championship. It was McLaren’s first drivers’ title since Lewis Hamilton became world champion with the team in 2008.

His rise has been closely tied to McLaren, and his loyalty to the team is a central part of how Norris views his future. The Briton’s success also followed years of progression and race victories with Woking, including his victory at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix during his championship-winning campaign.

Could Lando Norris be hinting at Ferrari?

Speaking on the Beyond the Grid podcast, Lando Norris was asked whether he could imagine becoming one of the relatively rare Formula 1 drivers to spend his entire career with a single team. His answer suggested that this remains the most likely outcome.

“Do I see myself as a one-team driver? Most likely,” Lando Norris replied. “Because I don’t know how long I’m going to stay in Formula 1. My contract still has several years to run, so I know I’m not going anywhere soon.”

However, Norris then introduced an intriguing qualification. Although he remains committed to McLaren and is not suggesting that a move is approaching, he admitted that one particular destination would interest him if he ever decided to pursue a completely different challenge.

“If there is somewhere I would like to go, there is only one, and that’s it. There is only one place that I would really be interested in, but that is a very, very distant future.”

Norris did not name the team. That mystery is what makes the comment particularly interesting from a Ferrari perspective. A future move to Maranello cannot be inferred as a fact from what the British driver said, but Ferrari is inevitably one of the possibilities fans may consider when trying to identify the single alternative destination he has in mind. The Scuderia is itself building towards a new era, with the Ferrari project having undergone a major reset for 2026.

McLaren remains Lando Norris’s clear priority

For the foreseeable future, however, Norris’s message could hardly have been clearer. He is not preparing to enter the driver market and continues to regard McLaren as his home in Formula 1.

“For now, I’m totally committed to McLaren, the only team I’ll ever want to race for, and I consider them a family,” Lando Norris continued. “I want to do as much as possible with McLaren for as long as possible, five, ten years, and I’m very, very proud and happy to be able to say that, more than many other drivers in Formula 1 history.”

The world champion nevertheless acknowledged that his competitive instincts mean nobody can know with certainty how circumstances could develop over such a long period.

“My goal is to stay with McLaren forever, but I also love winning. So until that moment comes, you never know what might happen. Even if I don’t win, you know, I didn’t win for six years, I could have gone elsewhere and I didn’t, because at the end of the day I just want to have fun.”

“That’s how it’s been from the beginning, honestly. It’s easy to think that you have to be ruthless and do who knows what, but I will always give my best with McLaren, and even if sometimes we don’t win, it doesn’t necessarily mean that I want to go to another team. I just want to be with the people I get along with. That’s the only thing I really care about.”

Norris leaves one mystery for his long-term F1 future

The overall message is therefore one of commitment rather than an imminent transfer. The British driver wants to continue winning with McLaren, his current contract keeps him at Woking for several more years, and he can even envisage remaining there until the end of his Formula 1 career.

But his acknowledgement that exactly one other team genuinely appeals to him ensures there is still a fascinating unanswered question. Lando Norris may regard that possibility as belonging to a very distant future, but until he reveals the identity of the team, the possibility that Ferrari is the destination he has in mind will remain an enticing interpretation for the Tifosi.
