Oscar Piastri is emerging as a potential option for Ferrari’s future, with an ‘indirect’ confirmation supporting some rumors about a possible transfer to Maranello in the coming years. The Australian driver has reportedly been on the radar of Scuderia Ferrari, according to several whispers that started circulating a few months ago. Could Oscar Piastri really be driving the red car? There is an ‘indirect’ confirmation of Ferrari’s interest and a clear understanding of why he could be considered an option. But what future scenario would need to unfold for this to happen?
We have already discussed how Ferrari’s future could involve several faces from other teams, starting with Max Verstappen, who previously drove a Ferrari in the GT3 category at the Nürburgring, winning the race. However, the Dutchman has already dismissed any rumors, stating that a move to Maranello would only happen if the right conditions to win were present. He does not want to drive a Ferrari just for the sake of it. Meanwhile, the driver market is starting to heat up, especially around 2027, when Charles Leclerc might decide to leave the Scuderia. The Monegasque driver has reportedly had contacts with three different teams so far. Ferrari is therefore looking to prepare in advance to avoid being caught off guard if this scenario comes to pass.
Leclerc-Piastri swap between Ferrari and McLaren?
We have also discussed reports that Nicholas Todt, Charles Leclerc’s manager, has met with Andrea Stella and Alessandro Alunni Bravi. Mark Webber, the manager of Oscar Piastri, has openly expressed his future interest in Ferrari: “For now, he must stay at McLaren to complete his development path, and even though Ferrari remains a potential destination, he needs to achieve the final results first. In the meantime, it would be beneficial if he improved his Italian…” These words were reported by Paolo Ciccarone on RMC Motori. Lando Norris, on the other hand, is managed directly by Zak Brown, CEO of the papaya team. If a seat were to open up at McLaren, the dynamics could become extremely interesting.
Ferrari would need to cover a potential departure of Charles Leclerc, and bringing in Oscar Piastri would not be a wrong move at all. Therefore, 2027 could become a turning point in the driver market. However, it’s important to note that this escalation would only occur if Ferrari fails to provide Leclerc with the opportunity to fight for the title following the regulatory changes. Once the hierarchy on track is clear in 2026, serious discussions about the driver market can begin.
