Mick Schumacher continues to make headlines despite limited opportunities in F1. His uncle, former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher, believes the ex-Haas driver deserves a second chance and even considers him superior to some current drivers on the grid.
Speaking on Sky Sport’s German podcast Backstage Boxengasse, Ralf stated that Mick is better than Yuki Tsunoda, Liam Lawson, and Franco Colapinto. While acknowledging the talent of the three, he emphasized that Schumacher surpasses them in various aspects.
Drivers in precarious situations
All three drivers mentioned face uncertain futures. Lawson and Tsunoda risk losing their seats in their respective teams, while Colapinto, who replaced Jack Doohan at Alpine, has yet to prove consistent development and growth in his racing career.
Mick, for his part, spent two seasons in F1 with Haas, without standing out, and was involved in costly incidents that affected his results. Replaced by Nico Hülkenberg, he spent the following years as a reserve driver for Mercedes and Alpine, without securing a full-time role.
Ralf argues Mick deserves a second chance
Despite these challenges, Ralf believes Mick deserves another opportunity, emphasizing that the young Schumacher has enough talent to compete at a high level. In his view, not calling him back into F1 would be a mistake. “If you understand a bit how I see it, and if you also look at the careers of current F1 drivers, I believe Mick is at least better than Yuki Tsunoda,” he said.
“And in my opinion, he’s also better than Liam Lawson… Franco Colapinto started well, but so far he hasn’t shown the development he should have. That’s why I say all three are worse than Mick from my perspective, even significantly worse. So I just can’t understand it. But now people will say again: ‘Of course, he’s his uncle.’”
Future opportunities outside F1
In recent months, rumors circulated about a potential role for Mick with Cadillac. However, the German driver reportedly declined the offer, focusing instead on opportunities in the United States. He recently tested an IndyCar with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, opening new doors for his racing future.
