Has seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton already regretted leaving Mercedes to join Ferrari? The British driver’s doubts have grown, but here’s what he revealed. His first season at Ferrari has not gone as expected, which may have led him to question his February 2024 transfer from Mercedes. While frustrations and doubts have increased, Lewis Hamilton remains candid about his experience with the Scuderia.
The 2025 season has been full of challenges for the Italian team, yet no one has given up. Unfortunately, the SF-25 represents a car born from a flawed project, without a single person to blame. Everyone is called to perform better with the 2026 car, which could fight for the world title. Lewis Hamilton appeared visibly “tired” during the Qatar Grand Prix press conference, showing little interest in answering journalists’ questions. The post-race frustration in Las Vegas may have suggested he was uninterested in the next season, but that is not the case. At the end of the year, fatigue is natural—but does it make him regret his choice? Here’s what he told Sky Sports F1.
Hamilton: “This is a hypothetical question, and I don’t…”
“This is a hypothetical question, and I won’t go into it. But I do not regret my decision to join this team. I know it takes time to build and grow within an organization, and I expected that.” At the start of the season, Lewis Hamilton clearly stated his goal of restoring Ferrari to its former glory. Over time, however, he may have realized just how many changes are necessary within the team. There have even been rumors that Lewis is sometimes ignored by certain team members due to resistance to altering established work procedures. The seven-time champion, however, has not given up and still believes that Ferrari can be reborn. Passion remains the team’s greatest strength.
“I know that passion is the most special thing about the brand and the people who work here. And then there are the fans: as we travel around the world, the extraordinary support we receive. I think this probably makes it even more difficult when we face challenges, because you can see how much passion, dedication, and hard work every single person in the factory puts in, yet the results do not reflect or reward it. So, you feel it more; it’s a huge emotional bubble.”
This emotion can also be a negative factor. Lewis Hamilton’s only highlight this season with the red car came in China, and then nothing else. The 2026 season represents the most important challenge for Ferrari’s F1 future. Chasing rivals again would mean wasting more years. Hamilton is actively contributing to the development of Project 678, whose technical direction is mainly entrusted to Loic Serra. “I think we have a lot of work to do. During the winter, we will analyze the season, and there are many improvements we need to make collectively. I don’t think anyone in the team is under the illusion that we don’t all have to play our part. I believe we can do it; I hope we will implement and make these changes, along with a better package.”
