The 2026 Formula 1 World Championship is more open than ever following the British Grand Prix, with Mercedes’ recent reliability problems allowing Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton to move firmly into title contention.
Writing in today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Alessandro Meglio highlights how Lewis Hamilton now sits just 32 points behind championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli. George Russell is positioned between the two after benefiting from a fortunate result at Silverstone, leaving the top three separated by only a handful of points.
Mercedes’ reliability has reignited the title battle
“The title fight is more open than ever,” Meglio wrote. “The problems suffered by Andrea Kimi Antonelli at Silverstone have allowed George Russell and Lewis Hamilton to close the gap in the standings. Russell is now 25 points behind his teammate, while Hamilton trails by 32.”
Although Mercedes has consistently produced what many consider the fastest car on the grid, reliability has prevented the team from fully capitalising on its performance advantage. Both Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell have endured costly setbacks throughout the season, while Lewis Hamilton remains the only driver to have completed every single racing lap so far this year.
George Russell’s season has swung from bad luck to good fortune
George Russell’s campaign has featured dramatic highs and lows.
At Suzuka, he finished fourth after being penalised following the deployment of the Safety Car. In Canada, he retired from the lead because of a battery failure. Monaco proved equally frustrating, as a five-second penalty for an error in calculating the average speed in the pit lane was followed by a drive-through penalty after the team failed to serve the original sanction correctly during his pit stop.
At Silverstone, Russell’s race also appeared destined to end in disappointment after suffering a slow puncture. Instead, circumstances ultimately worked in his favour, allowing him to secure an unexpected second-place finish.
Over the last three Grands Prix alone, Russell has recovered 46 points on Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who retired in both Barcelona and Great Britain. While the championship leader enjoyed some good fortune earlier in the season—including Australia, where a red flag allowed him to qualify—Mercedes’ reliability issues have since affected him as well.
Lewis Hamilton emerges as a genuine title contender
According to Meglio, the biggest credit belongs to Lewis Hamilton. The Ferrari driver has built his championship challenge on remarkable consistency, placing himself firmly among the leading contenders despite Mercedes often enjoying the faster package.
“The real credit so far belongs to Hamilton, whose consistency has allowed the seven-time world champion to establish himself as the third man in the title fight. If Ferrari confirms the progress shown at Silverstone, dreaming of an eighth world title will no longer seem unrealistic.”
