The Formula 1 circus is like a massive caravan that, from March to December, moves non-stop from one race to the next to complete the calendar. In just a few days, the teams shift from one country to another, often hundreds or even thousands of kilometers apart, with only a few days allowed to return home to their families. But what really lies behind all of this? Ferrari tells the story, revealing the secrets of its logistics.
The 2025 Formula 1 calendar is packed: 24 races around the world, from Australia to Asia, through Europe and into the Americas. From the very first rounds, the season has proven demanding. After Melbourne, the team flew straight to Shanghai and, with this upcoming weekend, it’ll be three races in a row.
From Japan the team went to the Arabian Peninsula, and without pause, now it’s off to Miami. But what really happens behind these transfers? Ahead of the Jeddah GP, Sergio Bondi, Head of Logistics at Scuderia Ferrari, explained: “At the start of the season, the most important phase is preparing the sea freight shipments of the structures we’ll use at the various Grands Prix.”
“This is a very delicate task that requires great planning and strict timing. Speaking of the triple-header—the run of three races in a row—the biggest challenge is managing the cycle of components that go from Maranello to the track, such as upgrades and part replacements, and then return from the track to the factory.”
Ferrari logistics: impressive numbers
“In a year, we cover about 340,000 km. We have to manage the movements of more than 100 people, structures, and materials. For personnel, we handle all check-ins, check-outs, vehicle rentals, and airport formalities. For materials, we have various identical kits that we use to cover all the season’s races; their movements are meticulously planned.” – he pointed out.
“The one used in Bahrain is on its way to Monaco. The one used in China is heading to Miami, from where it will be transferred via organized trains to cover the rest of the American rounds. All short-haul transfers are handled by truck. We try to minimize air freight as much as possible for sustainability reasons.”
Ferrari, keeping an eye on expenses
Ferrari is a team that carefully monitors travel expenses. “Wherever possible, we prefer sea freight over air, because although slower, it allows us to save economically. We plan shipments for each race by creating departure batches where we try to reduce the effect of the volume of what we’re transporting, aiming for the ideal compromise between weight and space.” – Sergio Bondi concluded.
