Formula 1 is considered one of the most prestigious motorsports events in the world. In recent years, Formula 1 has been facing criticism for its lack of inclusivity. You can still notice a lack of women, black, and LGBT drivers, making it difficult for them to succeed on the track.
The benefits of diversity in F1are numerous. There are increased chances of new ideas and fresh ways of thinking, more diverse perspectives and open mindsets, and better decision making. But, just like any other field, things aren’t that impressive in the world of F1.
Social and Romantic Diversity in Everyday Life
Sex, gender, and sexuality are not always easy topics to talk about. With the rapid growth of social media and digital culture, it’s becoming more challenging to avoid talking about it. Moreover, the availability of niche dating platforms, like LGBTQ sites, mature dating sites, platforms for arranging a bi hookup, etc., has raised awareness about the issue.
In today’s world of digitalization, anyone can log in to a dating website made for bisexuals and date within a like-minded community of people who won’t judge you. On dating websites, LGBTQ individuals don’t feel left behind in society; they feel free enough to express themselves, seek love, and arrange casual encounters without limits.
F1 has been criticized in the past for its lack of diversity. Due to a number of scandals in the early years, F1 was criticized for being socially irresponsible and not supporting female drivers or women’s participation at all.
Teams like Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport have taken a step forward by acknowledging the importance of these topics and making sure that their teams are inclusive for all. The same has been seen from Team Ferrari, but those efforts will take time to take full effect.
The Current Situation in Formula 1
Formula One racing is a sport that men have dominated for over 50 years. Still, in recent years, we’ve seen the emergence of female drivers and LGBT drivers. The first openly gay driver to compete in Formula One was the British driver David Oxton in 1983. The first openly lesbian driver was Italian Susie Wolff in 1994.
The role of LGBT drivers is important because they represent a new generation of racers who are challenging the traditional idea of what a racer should look like. They’re also showing that there’s no need for gender or sexuality to be limited to just one person, thus breaking down barriers between people with different backgrounds and abilities through participation in this sport.
The issue is that even today, LGBTQ drivers are not being accepted by the public. They’re not seen as part of the mainstream but as a novelty or something to be laughed at. While there’re more and more people who are accepting of this change, there are still many who have their doubts about it.
Similarly, the history of black drivers in Formula One racing dates back to the late 1960s and early 1970s. While there were many black drivers in Formula One, their efforts were often met with discrimination and racism. However, their efforts paved the way for many other black drivers who are now competing in F1 today.
In 2022, there are no active black drivers on the Formula One grid, and it’s unclear if there will ever be any again. The only active black driver was James Hinchcliffe, who retired from driving after crashing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2018.
Speaking of inclusivity and diversity in F1, you can’t ignore what women face when they take racing as a career. While F1 allows women to compete in the same competition as men, the gender balance is far from optimal. Only five women could make it to the highest level in this motorsport, and that’s quite disappointing.
Many teams are sharing their thoughts now and taking steps to improve diversity in F1. For instance, Ferrari has always been a leader when it comes to industry practices – it recently became the first company in Italy to receive the Equal Salary Certificate for paying equality. Moreover, they’re committed to including employees from over 57 different nationalities, suggesting their concern about inclusivity and diversity. Still, the efforts are far from enough.
Expectations and Things to Change
F1 teams are now being pressured to address race, gender, and sexuality inclusivity. The pressure is coming from the fans and the media. F1 teams that do not address these issues will be seen as out of touch with modern society. CEO Bernie Ecclestone said that F1 is committed to diversity and willing to take steps to ensure people from underrepresented groups also get an equal opportunity to join and build an impressive career in this amazing sport.
The issue is that massively fewer girls go into karting than boys. Women who race in F1 tend to start later than their male peers, are often excluded at a grassroots level, and don’t get factory team seats. As talent scouts tend to overlook girls, and that trend starts even earlier in their career due to the assumption that they won’t make it to F1, women will face an uphill battle in their professional life.
Conclusion
In the world of car racing, women are still making their way in an area that’s been traditionally seen as ‘for men only.’ But there are a lot of barriers that women face, both in terms of life and career. Surely, things are getting better, but a lot of work still needs to be done.
