The emergency in Emilia-Romagna
Unfortunately, the bad weather and the state of emergency in Emilia-Romagna continues relentlessly, with heavy rains and floods severely impacting the region for several days now. Among the most affected areas are those near the ‘Enzo e Dino Ferrari’ Circuit in Imola, where the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix was scheduled to take place this weekend.
It is inconceivable to even consider the idea of holding the race weekend as planned, which is why the FIA, Formula 1, ACI (Automobile Club d’Italia), and all other national and local authorities have unanimously decided to cancel the event.
Emilia Romagna Grand Prix postponed
Imola would have been the first Grand Prix of the 2023 Formula One season to be held in Europe and would have marked the beginning of three consecutive events on the Old Continent. The following week, the sport will head to the Principality of Monaco, and then conclude the short stint on June 4th in Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix. Once the emergency situation is resolved, another issue of lesser magnitude will arise, namely determining the rescheduled date for the event, which is likely to take place in 2026, as emphasized by ACI President Angelo Sticchi-Damiani.
The message from the Automobile Club de Monaco
In the meantime, drivers and teams have expressed their message of solidarity with the people affected by this emergency, which has resulted in a total of nine deaths according to the latest data. Among the thoughts expressed are those from the organizing body of the Monaco Grand Prix, where the next race of the championship will take place from May 26th to 28th. The official statement published on their social media pages reads: “The Automobile Club de Monaco wishes to send its thoughts and support to the people affected by the floods in Emilia-Romagna, to the emergency services mobilized, as well as to our colleagues promoting the Imola circuit and the entire Formula 1 community.”
