Hungarian Grand Prix organizers have confirmed plans for a massive redevelopment process regarding the facilities at the Hungaroring circuit, a venue that has hosted Formula 1 for almost three decades.
The Hungaroring also announced that race day tickets for the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix have already sold out. The sale of 100,000 tickets for Sunday’s Formula 1 event, completed with more than seven months ahead of next year’s race, shows a huge increase in interest. In the 2022 championship, tickets for the Hungary event were available until April.
The current deal between Hungaroring and Formula 1 is available for five more years. With the goal of getting a new contract after 2027, the race track has confirmed a “strategic development programme” that will initially target a major redeveloping of the utility infrastructure like water supply and cabling across the site. At the same time, there will be new buildings like a reception hall, a control centre and a ‘customer area’.
The circuit president Zsolt Gyulay explained that the Hungaroring has “practically been waiting for this moment” for more than a decade, with important renovations which were much needed to keep up with the modern venues, especially now that there is a lot of interest from many countries to host a Formula One event.

The last circuit updates at the Hungaroring were finalized more than ten years ago, while a resurfacing process was done in 2016.
Zsolt Gyulay is aware that such a redevelopment plan is very important to make sure Hungary’s race circuit can compete with other venues and therefore remain an attractive location for the sport: “Seeing the processes taking place in F1 and the newly added tracks, this is not enough, this is really the penultimate moment when we can start work,” he explained.
“We see that, among the many ‘one-size-fits-all’ tracks, traditional locations similar to the Hungarian one are becoming increasingly valuable, and the proximity of Budapest will always be an amazing attraction for the Hungaroring.” – circuit president Zsolt Gyulay added.
A few new circuits have been included on the Formula 1 calendar in the last few years, which means the overall standards have become higher for everyone, as pointed out by Zsolt Gyulay: “We must not ignore that the infrastructure of the new tracks offer a much higher level of service than ours. Thanks to the strategic development programme, we will be able to compete with them in the foreseeable future, which will allow us to keep the Formula 1 series here.” – he added.
For now there is no official deadline for finalizing the upgrades at the Hungaroring circuit, and there will be no modifications to the existing circuit layout that was last revised two decades ago.
