Former Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel enjoyed a remarkable Formula 1 career that extended over 16 seasons and five different constructors, ultimately establishing the German driver as one of the most accomplished and celebrated figures in the history of the sport.
While Sebastian Vettel is most widely remembered for his four consecutive Drivers’ Championships achieved with Red Bull Racing, it is important to note that he came very close to increasing that tally during his tenure with the Maranello team. His rivalry with current Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton during the years when Hamilton drove for Mercedes was particularly intense, creating some frosty interactions, although the two now maintain a cordial and respectful relationship.
Throughout his career, Sebastian Vettel shared garages with several outstanding teammates, including Mark Webber at Red Bull and Kimi Räikkönen at Ferrari. His time alongside Webber was often marked by fiery on-track and off-track exchanges, but the teammate who arguably bested Vettel in performance was Charles Leclerc. Leclerc joined Ferrari following a year-long development period with Sauber in 2019 and immediately outperformed Vettel in the championship standings. After another season together, Ferrari opted to replace Vettel with Carlos Sainz, leaving the four-time world champion in search of a new opportunity within the sport.
Journalist Bianca Garloff has stated that, before Vettel ultimately signed with Aston Martin, he had expressed interest in joining Mercedes, a team valued at approximately £3.1 billion. However, according to Garloff, Toto Wolff intervened and blocked the potential move, preventing Vettel from securing a seat with the Silver Arrows.
On F1 Insider’s YouTube channel, Garloff was asked whether Wolff might ever consider inviting Vettel back into Formula 1. She responded by emphasizing that Toto Wolff would not pursue such a move, noting that Vettel’s time in the sport had effectively concluded. Garloff explained that when Vettel’s Ferrari contract was not renewed, he had sought a drive with Mercedes, but Wolff had decided against it. This decision, she suggested, directly led to Vettel joining Aston Martin, as the Mercedes opportunity was no longer available.
The journalist stressed that the ultimate choice rested with Toto Wolff and that the outcome was unfavorable for Vettel. The German driver, she noted, had hoped to continue at the top level with the world championship-winning team but was forced to explore alternatives as a result.
Sebastian Vettel’s potential return to Mercedes was again discussed in 2024 when Lewis Hamilton announced his move from Mercedes to Ferrari. At that time, the German’s name surfaced as a possible candidate to fill Hamilton’s departing seat, despite having been retired from Formula 1 for over a year and not participating in any professional races since the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Addressing the speculation about Vettel returning with the Silver Arrows, Toto Wolff commented via Formula 1’s official website that Vettel had indeed shown some interest in racing again, mentioning his recent sports car test with Porsche and the enjoyment he derived from it. Wolff emphasized that Vettel has been a long-time friend and a highly respected competitor, and as such, his name could never be completely discounted when discussing potential driver lineups. He noted that any discussions about future seats would naturally consider the possibility of Vettel returning, even if a final decision had not been made.
Ultimately, Mercedes chose to prioritize the potential of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a young Italian prospect, over Sebastian Vettel’s experience. Antonelli’s initial steps in Formula 1 have been challenging, but the team recognized the long-term benefits of giving a promising teenager his chance. By contrast, Vettel’s final seasons in the sport had demonstrated that while he remained a highly skilled driver, a return to championship-winning form at the pinnacle of Formula 1 would have been extremely unlikely.
