Italian motorsport official Massimo Rivola has opened up about why Ferrari decided not to sign Kimi Antonelli in his early years, a choice that ultimately led the talented Bolognese driver to join Mercedes.
Fans have long wondered why Andrea Kimi Antonelli, now widely recognized as one of the brightest young talents in Formula 1, never drove for the Maranello team, the Italian team many considered the perfect fit for him. An Italian star in Ferrari red would not only have strengthened the Scuderia’s legacy but also further energized motorsport enthusiasm across Italy.
The backstory behind Antonelli’s Ferrari rejection
Several insiders and key figures in Formula 1 have shed light on the events that led to Kimi Antonelli signing with Mercedes. From Toto Wolff to former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, multiple voices have detailed the negotiations and missed opportunities that defined the early stages of his career.
Among them is Massimo Rivola, who was serving as the Ferrari Driver Academy director at the time. The current sports director for Aprilia in MotoGP reportedly saw immense potential in Antonelli when the young Bolognese was just eleven years old, believing he had discovered a future Formula 1 star. Sources indicate Rivola strongly advocated for Antonelli’s inclusion in Ferrari’s junior program, confident in his raw talent and maturity despite his age.
However, the deal did not move forward. Maurizio Arrivabene, Ferrari’s former Team Principal, reportedly halted the process, deeming Antonelli “too young” to be a serious prospect within the Scuderia. This conservative approach ultimately prevented Ferrari from locking in a driver who could develop into a world-class talent under their wing.
Mercedes seized the opportunity
With Ferrari stepping back, Toto Wolff acted quickly to secure Kimi Antonelli for the Mercedes junior program. This early move allowed the young Italian to grow in a structured environment that accelerated his path to Formula 1. Today, Kimi Antonelli’s rapid rise and impressive results in the sport confirm what Massimo Rivola had long predicted: he is destined to be a major figure in F1, potentially challenging for world championships in the near future.
Reflecting on the situation, Massimo Rivola emphasized that while Ferrari’s decision might have seemed cautious at the time, it also highlights the fine margins and pivotal choices that shape a driver’s career. For Kimi Antonelli, joining Mercedes proved to be the perfect platform to showcase his exceptional talent on the global stage.
