Charles Leclerc’s dominant victory at the 2026 British Grand Prix was more than just an important personal milestone. According to former Formula 1 driver and analyst Jolyon Palmer, the result may also prove to be extremely valuable for Lewis Hamilton as Ferrari continues its push towards the front of the championship.
While Charles Leclerc celebrated his first Grand Prix victory since late 2024, the performance also demonstrated that Ferrari’s recent technical progress is translating into genuine race-winning pace. More importantly, it showed that the SF-26 is now capable of challenging Mercedes at circuits where many expected the Silver Arrows to hold a clear advantage.
For Lewis Hamilton, whose championship ambitions remain very much alive, having a second Ferrari consistently competing at the front could become an important factor during the remainder of the season.
Charles Leclerc delivered one of his strongest performances in recent seasons
From the moment the lights went out at Silverstone, Charles Leclerc looked completely in control. The Ferrari driver launched perfectly from the front row, moved ahead into Abbey and immediately established himself at the front of the field.
His pace remained consistently strong throughout the race, allowing him to manage the gap while controlling tyre degradation and race strategy. It was arguably Charles Leclerc’s most complete performance since joining Ferrari, combining speed, consistency and flawless execution over an entire Grand Prix distance.
Although Andrea Kimi Antonelli appeared capable of mounting a serious challenge during parts of the race, Mercedes’ hopes faded after damage to the W17 compromised the Italian driver’s performance. The incident dramatically reduced his ability to fight for victory and ultimately transformed the complexion of the race.
Jolyon Palmer believes Ferrari’s resurgence benefits Lewis Hamilton
Despite Mercedes’ reliability problems playing a role in the outcome, Jolyon Palmer believes Ferrari’s performance should not be underestimated. In his analysis following the British Grand Prix, he argued that Charles Leclerc’s return to top form represented one of Ferrari’s biggest positives of the season.
The former Formula 1 driver suggested that the Monegasque’s recent breakthrough had been triggered by an important change in setup philosophy, allowing the Monegasque to finally extract the full potential of the SF-26. While Palmer acknowledged that it remains to be seen whether Ferrari can reproduce that level of competitiveness at Spa-Francorchamps and beyond, he viewed the signs as highly encouraging.
Perhaps most importantly, Palmer believed that Charles Leclerc returning to peak performance strengthens Ferrari as a whole. Even if Lewis Hamilton remains the Scuderia’s leading championship contender, having two cars consistently competing near the front increases Ferrari’s strategic options and its ability to challenge Mercedes over the remainder of the season.
Mercedes may still hold the benchmark, but Ferrari is closing the gap
Jolyon Palmer also noted that Mercedes still appears to possess the fastest overall package, particularly in the hands of championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli. However, outright speed has not always translated into maximum points.
Repeated reliability issues have prevented Mercedes from fully capitalising on its performance advantage, allowing Ferrari to steadily reduce the gap in both championships. The contrast between the two teams has become increasingly evident in recent races, with Ferrari combining strong reliability and an aggressive development programme while Mercedes continues to battle technical setbacks.
Although Charles Leclerc remains some distance behind in the Drivers’ Championship, Palmer suggested that Formula 1 seasons can change rapidly, especially if Ferrari continues improving the SF-26 at its current pace.
Silverstone highlighted Ferrari’s growing technical strength
Ferrari’s competitiveness at Silverstone surprised many observers. Before the weekend, the high-speed nature of the circuit appeared to favour Mercedes, and the W17 was widely expected to enjoy a clear advantage over the SF-26.
Instead, Ferrari produced one of its strongest weekends of the year, thanks to a combination of technical upgrades and more favourable operating conditions. Cooler temperatures allowed the Scuderia to fully exploit the latest power unit specification introduced in recent races, something that had not been possible during the extreme heat of the Austrian Grand Prix.
In addition, Silverstone’s smoother and less abrasive asphalt reduced tyre degradation and overheating, two areas that had limited Ferrari’s performance only one week earlier at the Red Bull Ring. The result was a much more consistent race pace across all stints, enabling both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to remain competitive throughout the event.
Ferrari is emerging as a genuine championship contender
Following the British Grand Prix, Ferrari has every reason to believe it can continue applying pressure to Mercedes in the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season. With Charles Leclerc rediscovering winning form and Lewis Hamilton remaining firmly in the title battle, the Scuderia finally has two drivers capable of consistently fighting near the front.
Even so, Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur has remained cautious when discussing championship ambitions, preferring to focus on continuing the team’s development programme rather than making bold predictions.
Whether Ferrari ultimately has enough performance to challenge for both world titles remains uncertain. What Silverstone clearly demonstrated, however, is that the SF-26 is no longer an occasional threat. Instead, Ferrari has established itself as a regular contender for victories, and Charles Leclerc’s return to the top step of the podium may ultimately prove to be just as significant for Lewis Hamilton’s championship hopes as it was for the Monegasque driver’s own confidence.
