How to be useful even when starting from the last position: a lesson from Carlos Sainz and Scuderia Ferrari. Great strategic work by the Maranello team in qualifying for the Turkish Grand Prix, with the Spaniard being one of the protagonists despite knowing he was starting from 20th and last position in the race on Sunday.
In Q1 Carlos Sainz was sent on track in order for the Maranello team to gather important information in key-race terms on the behavior of his SF21 Ferrari car on a wet track. And Carlos eliminated Daniel Ricciardo, a very important result for the constructors’ classification, where the Italian side is behind 17.5 points from its rivals.
Just that? Not by far. Because in Q2 Charles Leclerc had a lot of trouble with the medium tires. The Monegasque, who lost control of his car at the last corner in the first run, was in danger of being knocked out ahead of his final flaying lap and was helped by his teammate. Carlos Sainz in fact returned to the track exclusively to give a tow to Charles, who thus achieved the seventh fastest time and qualified for Q3. And Charles immediately thanked the Smooth Operator:
Charles gets told he is P7.
Charles: Is it enough?
Race Engineer: It is enough!
Charles: Good job from Carlos for the slipstream!
