Lewis Hamilton’s commanding victory at the Spanish Grand Prix has reignited discussion about Ferrari’s role in the 2026 Formula 1 championship battle. While Mercedes still boasts one of the strongest overall packages on the grid, some analysts believe the Scuderia may possess an advantage that could become increasingly important as the season progresses.
Following his breakthrough win in Barcelona, Lewis Hamilton has moved closer to the front of the championship standings and significantly strengthened his position within Ferrari. With momentum clearly shifting in the British driver’s favour, questions are beginning to emerge about how Ferrari could maximize its chances of ending its long wait for a Formula 1 world title.
One factor attracting growing attention is Ferrari’s driver situation. Unlike Mercedes, which continues to balance the ambitions of two championship-calibre drivers, Ferrari could eventually find itself in a position where its strategic priorities become much clearer.
Ferrari may hold a strategic advantage over Mercedes
Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer believes the Scuderia could benefit from circumstances that Mercedes may struggle to replicate.
Throughout the season, Mercedes has enjoyed the luxury—and challenge—of having both George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli regularly fighting near the front. While that gives the Brackley-based team multiple opportunities to score points, it can also create complications when teammates are racing one another.
Barcelona provided a clear example.
Several on-track battles between George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli allowed rivals to capitalize on lost time, reducing Mercedes’ ability to control the race strategically. Although those battles were not solely responsible for the final result, they highlighted the difficulties that arise when two drivers are pursuing individual championship ambitions.
Writing in his latest Formula 1 column, Jolyon Palmer suggested that Ferrari could eventually find itself in a simpler position if Lewis Hamilton remains firmly in the title fight while Charles Leclerc falls further behind in the standings.
The former Renault driver argued that if Charles Leclerc is unable to stay close to the championship frontrunners, Ferrari may ultimately decide to focus its efforts around Lewis Hamilton’s title challenge. In Palmer’s view, such a scenario could provide Ferrari with a significant advantage over Mercedes, which may be far more reluctant to prioritize one driver over another while both George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli remain competitive.
Palmer also expressed confidence that Charles Leclerc would recover from his recent difficult run of form. However, he noted that if Lewis Hamilton continues to score heavily while Charles Leclerc struggles to match the pace of the championship contenders, Ferrari could eventually be forced into making important strategic decisions.
According to Palmer, that possibility could become one of the most influential factors in determining the outcome of the title fight.
Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence is changing the championship picture
Only a few months ago, discussions surrounding Lewis Hamilton focused on whether the seven-time world champion could still compete at the highest level. Today, the narrative looks entirely different.
Ferrari’s extensive upgrade package introduced in Spain transformed the competitiveness of the SF-26, while Lewis Hamilton delivered one of his strongest weekends in recent memory. The British driver not only secured victory but also demonstrated the kind of pace and confidence that characterized his most successful seasons.
The timing of the result could hardly have been better.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s late retirement due to a technical issue allowed Lewis Hamilton to make significant gains in the championship standings. Although the Ferrari driver still trails the young Italian by 41 points, the gap now appears far less daunting than it did only a few weeks ago.
Combined with Ferrari’s recent development gains and the prospect of additional upgrades later in the season, there is growing belief that Lewis Hamilton could emerge as a genuine title contender during the second half of the campaign.
Toto Wolff knows how dangerous Lewis Hamilton can be
Among those paying close attention to Ferrari’s progress is Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
Having spent more than a decade working alongside Lewis Hamilton during one of Formula 1’s most dominant eras, Wolff understands better than most what the British driver is capable of when momentum begins to build.
Speaking after the Spanish Grand Prix, Toto Wolff reportedly acknowledged that a resurgent Lewis Hamilton remains one of the most formidable competitors in the sport.
The Mercedes boss suggested that throughout their years together, he repeatedly witnessed periods when Lewis Hamilton sensed an opportunity and elevated his performances to another level. Once confidence and results aligned, Wolff noted, stopping the seven-time world champion often became an extremely difficult task.
He also observed that Lewis Hamilton appears increasingly comfortable within Ferrari. The relationship with his race engineer seems strong, while the atmosphere surrounding the team has improved significantly following the Barcelona victory. According to Toto Wolff, Lewis Hamilton looked genuinely happy on the podium, reflecting the confidence and satisfaction of a driver who is fully embracing his latest challenge.
Ferrari’s title hopes are becoming increasingly realistic
The 2026 Formula 1 season remains finely balanced, but Ferrari’s recent progress has fundamentally changed the outlook of the championship battle.
Mercedes continues to possess an exceptionally competitive package, while George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli remain serious threats. However, Ferrari is no longer viewed as an outsider.
Lewis Hamilton’s victory in Barcelona demonstrated that the SF-26 is capable of winning races, while Charles Leclerc’s speed throughout the season has also confirmed the potential of the package despite several setbacks.
If Ferrari continues developing at its current pace and Lewis Hamilton remains within striking distance of the championship leaders, the Scuderia could eventually find itself in a position where strategic clarity becomes a decisive weapon. For now, both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc remain free to pursue their own ambitions. But as the season progresses, Ferrari may discover that having a clear championship leader offers an advantage that could prove invaluable in the fight against Mercedes.
After Barcelona, the possibility of Lewis Hamilton mounting a serious challenge for an eighth Formula 1 world championship no longer feels like an unlikely dream. It is becoming an increasingly realistic objective.
