F1 The Movie: How an Email to Lewis Hamilton Helped Shape the Summer Blockbuster
Director Joseph Kosinski has revealed that a simple email to seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton played a pivotal role in the creation of the record-breaking summer hit, F1 The Movie.
Since its global theatrical release on June 12, 2025, F1 The Movie has become the highest-grossing sports film in history, raking in over $630 million at the box office. Audiences have responded enthusiastically, awarding the film a remarkable 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Hollywood legend Brad Pitt has seen this become his most commercially successful feature to date.
The film became available on Apple TV on December 12, offering viewers a gripping story set in the high-stakes world of Formula 1. It follows veteran driver Sonny Hayes, portrayed by Brad Pitt, who is called out of retirement by his former team-mate Ruben Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem, to rescue the struggling backmarker team APX GP. Hayes must navigate this challenge alongside rookie teammate Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris, balancing intense competition with the internal pressures of a faltering F1 team.
Much of the movie was filmed on location in the F1 paddock across several Grand Prix weekends, featuring appearances from the entire 2023 F1 grid. This level of realism and immersion was central to Kosinski’s vision.
From Underdogs to the Big Screen
For Joseph Kosinski, F1 The Movie was born from two core ideas. The first inspiration came from Netflix’s popular Formula 1 series Drive to Survive. Joseph Kosinski explained that the show’s initial season highlighted not just the star drivers and top teams, but the struggles of backmarker teams fighting for survival.
Kosinski emphasized that these underdog stories—teams battling to reach the top ten or even maintain their place in Formula 1—were perfect for cinematic storytelling. “The concept of underdogs striving to survive and compete at the highest level was something that immediately felt like a film waiting to be made,” he explained.
The Email That Made It Authentic
The second idea focused on authenticity. Joseph Kosinski wanted the movie to feel real, capturing the intensity and precision of Formula 1 racing. To achieve this, he realized the involvement of a real F1 driver was essential, leading him to reach out to Lewis Hamilton directly.
Kosinski recounted sending Hamilton a simple but direct email, asking if he would help make the most authentic racing movie ever. Hamilton, intrigued and impressed by the vision, agreed to participate. The collaboration allowed Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to ensure that every detail—from the race sequences to the team dynamics—reflected real F1 experiences.
For Lewis Hamilton, the project represented a unique opportunity. Having previously considered a role in Top Gun: Maverick, Hamilton recognized the potential to bring authenticity to a film that both new fans and lifelong F1 enthusiasts could appreciate. The Ferrari driver noted that Joseph Kosinski and Jerry Bruckheimer were committed to capturing the true spirit of Formula 1, making it the most realistic racing movie ever produced.
By combining Hollywood storytelling with real-world Formula 1 insight, F1 The Movie delivers a thrilling, immersive experience that resonates with fans of the sport and general audiences alike, demonstrating how a single email can spark a global cinematic phenomenon.
