Formula 1 and the online casino universe are colliding in unprecedented ways. As sponsorship deals ride across the racing track, the operators of casinos are making large wagers and Ferrari fans are starting to take notice.
There’s always been an element of excitement in Formula 1; the screech of tyres, micro-seconds of passing and the pure theatre of race day. But more recently, there’s been another form of adrenaline flooding the paddock: Online casinos and bookies are putting their chips on F1 in a big way, and they’re not being coy.
From partnership agreements with racing teams to racing sponsorships, F1’s partnership with online gambling websites is picking up steam at a rapid rate, and it’s creating ripples, especially for fans of iconic teams like Ferrari. While the Prancing Horse has not inked a big-name gambling deal yet, the sport it competes in is shifting into high gear.
From spins to speed: Inside the online casino world
For the newcomer to the gambling sites infringing F1, it’s worth lifting the bonnet. These are not the bookies of your grandad’s generation; modern online casinos offer slick, interactive websites filled with quick games, in-play markets and immersive characteristics.
Take places like Gamdom.com. They don’t just carry sports betting, they have all types of roulette and blackjack, right through to new games like Mines, crash-based games and slots. Especially Mines is taking up players’ attention, as Mines is a fast-paced, high-risk casino game where you strategically uncover safe tiles on a grid to build multipliers and cash out before hitting a hidden mine and losing everything.
This new breed of casino is chasing those who want more than a bet, they want entertainment, company and a bit of an edge. And that fits very nicely with Formula 1’s high-adrenaline universe.
Betting big: Why online casinos want a piece of F1
Formula 1 is not only a sport, it’s a multi-million-pound entertainment behemoth with millions of ardent fans from Europe, Asia, the Americas and more. And for online gaming operators, that’s marketing gold. Supporting an F1 team or event is instant access to a high-octane enthusiast base, many of whom indulge in exactly the same high-stakes thrill that accompanies a punt on the big race.
Online casino companies, once niche or even clandestine, are now investing big time in visibility and brand recognition. Formula 1 is the perfect mix of glamour, risk and international appeal.
And here’s the clincher: As F1 becomes increasingly popular, especially among young people through social media and streaming, it is the perfect platform for gambling brands to connect with a new generation of gamblers.
Who’s on the grid? Casino brands join fast lane
While some of F1’s more staid sponsors; banks, tech companies and luxury watch manufacturers come to mind, remain highly influential, there is a new class of online casino players elbowing their way onto the grid.
Other operators, such as Stake.com, Betway and PokerStars, have already secured sponsorship arrangements with F1 teams and events. Stake, for instance, entered an agreement with the Alfa Romeo F1 Team (now Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber) in a headline-grabbing deal that had the casino operator assume the position of title sponsor for the team. It was a massive gamble, and one which unequivocally illustrated the growing power of online bookmaker websites in elite sport.
Another giant name in the industry, PokerStars, partnered with Red Bull Racing, bringing their familiar logo trackside and onto the car itself. These aren’t tiny sticker sponsorships, they’re full-blown brand activations complete with digital campaigns, fan engagement and sometimes even racing-themed special-edition games.
Even Formula 1 is not immune. A few gambling operators have reached official betting partnership level with the sport, giving them sole right to use F1 brand names on their websites and offer race-specific bets.
And what about Ferrari?
And now, let’s talk of the team that is admired by the majority of F1 fans; Scuderia Ferrari. With their extensive history, rabid followers and irrefutable charisma, Ferrari is one of the most famous names in sport, full stop.
Up to now, the Maranello crew hasn’t wed with an online casino sponsor yet, but that doesn’t necessarily equate to them being out. Ferrari prefers playing the long game and, after all, they didn’t rush into crypto sponsorships either, waiting for the industry to mature a bit. The same may prove to be the case with gambling.
All that aside, with as much money and publicity these casino operators are putting on the table, it would be no surprise to hear of a deal in the works in the weeks ahead. Imagine the Ferrari livery or Lewis Hamilton tastefully combined with a sleek, sophisticated nod to a luxury online gaming brand, maybe before long we shall see it.
The controversy factor: Is it all too risky?
Of course, not everybody’s keen on sports being invaded by gambling. Critics argue that linking F1 to betting can mainstream gambling culture, especially among young fans. The concern isn’t entirely unfounded, the viewing audience for F1 is increasingly young, and many of these internet sites have it so convenient to start gambling with a mere handful of clicks.
Governments in countries like the UK and Italy have already clamped down on gambling advertising in sport. Others even predict even tighter laws that will slow the influence of casino sponsors in F1, like what happened to tobacco during the early 2000s.
But for the moment, the contracts are going into high gear, not reverse gear.
